Anyone unironically using the phrase “activating ovaries” needs to be punched in the face.

It feels like such a male incel coded turn of phrase.

I’ve played 8 or so hours of this game and it is in no way “pedo bait”.

Literally just has a small girl as a protagonist. That’s it. That’s the “bait”. Girl younger than 18 exists.

I think all you need to know is that it was an influence by right wing agitators to create a wedge issue and get young men to their side. It was very successful in that measure and a lot of male toxicity online today stems from it.

Weird men got super upset that a woman was enjoying their same hobby, and then there was something about feminists ruining everything for them.

To be honest I get pretty lost too, but some people are like really obsessed with Anita S and it’s really weird and gross what they did.

It was nothing until Steve Bannon got involved.

Gamergate was a swell of support for scum like trump and bannon

My understanding is that there were genuine journalistic concerns with regards to Anita Sarkeesian, but then the narrative ended up getting twisted into a sexism thing when sexist gamers got involved. If I recall correctly, the initial issue was that the editor appeared to not be impartial when selecting who to write for what topic, and people believed that the perceived partiality was because of the fact that Sarkeesian and the editor were in a relationship. It’s a clear conflict of interest, but nothing major. What would have/should have been a minor journalistic scandal devolved into creepy incelposting.

Which really muddied the waters, because it also caused many regular people to dismiss the initial, core concern that the journal did have a conflict of interest.

While Sarkeesian definitely did not deserve the harassment, I think it should also be noted that she is a somewhat problematic individual. There was scandal that came up back in 2020 or so where she accused a game developer/ex-boyfriend of being abusive, which is generally acknowledged to have led to his suicide just several days later. But later reports revealed that many of her accusations were incompatible with evidence, and so it’s unclear how much, if any, of the accusations were truthful

Edit: mixed up two people. I’m unsure how much the wires got crossed, and I don’t have time to fact check myself right now. Please take this comment with a huge grain of salt

I went so far as to download archives of reddit from that time period. But I get completely lost when people start using “gamergate” and “anti-gamergate” as surrogates within that conversation. They both start getting used as subject, adverb, adjective, political stance, but it’s still not clearly.defined to an outsider.

One side was making bad faith arguments about journalistic integrity, which is a real concern, but what they really hated was women/minority/queer representation in games and wanted to grift on the incels.

The other side was making bad faith arguments about the lack of representation in games, which could have been better, but wasn’t really as bad as they made it out to be. They were also grifting, but were mostly harmless and could be ignored.

If I remember it correctly it started with some people calling out a journalist for not disclosing that the game she reviewed was made by her partner.

Which snowballed into a bigger discussion about corruption in games journalism. While at the same time there was a movement to have more representation for women, lgbtq and people of color (sorry if this not the correct term) in gaming.

Some of the representative of that movement had never touched a game and criticised beloved classics. This gave the extremist an in to spread their hate. Which led to a vicious online rivalry between two camps. The progressive gamers and the gamers.

Tell me if I forgot something.

I haven’t played it, but I’ve seen a little gameplay. It looks fun. I agree that if you look at the little android girl and think she’s sexualized in the game, that you’re probably the one doing the sexualizing.

Is everyone in this thread stupid?

I have only ever heard this from young women after seeing an especially cute kid. Saying stuff like “oh my god my ovaries” after watching a child do something cute/endearing. In no way is it a pedophilic phrase, it’s a somewhat TMI way of expressing a desire for motherhood. (Just out of curiosity as someone with no desire for children and no ovaries, can any cis-women confirm or deny this as being a physical experience/ sensation or is it just an expression)

If the game has parental themes I could see the phrase being used by a woman in a totally innocuous way.

E: ah it’s the circlejerk sub. I’ve been master baited. fuck

Pragmata is a new video game. In it you play a guy stranded on the moon and befriend an android that is a little girl. Besides having WiFi in her hands she’s basically just a little girl and the man becomes a surrogate father to her.

Right wing chuds like the person in this screenshot have seized on the parental themes in the game as some sort of counter to “woke”/left ideology. To the right, “woke” means slutty women having sex and abortions all the time. This is in contrast of the conservative view of women, which is to be a hole for a man to fuck and produce (male) babies. They think that women forming an emotional attachment to the android girl has somehow activated their motherly instinct.

The other “controversy” is people have been claiming this game is pedophilic because it features a man taking care of a little girl since it was first shown years ago. I think if that is what you take away from the game then you have issues and you’re telling on yourself.

“Activating ovaries” means they instantly get baby fever. Usually due to seeing a good parent doing good parent things or a cute small child doing cute small child things.

It has nothing to do with pedophilia. Quite the opposite.
