This is actually a real phenomenon. They tested this in several studies, and looking at another person, like when you’re sitting across a table, creates more psychosocial cues for confrontation. You can try it with your partner of choice: cuddle with one of you spooning the other, and talk about something mildly upsetting or embarassing to you, then repeat while holding hands and sitting across a table directly looking at each other.

The trick for Mario Party is to crank up the difficulty on a COM player and then just explicitly ally against them. We all win so long as Luigi loses. Actual star and coin count are just for bragging rights behind the primary objective of putting him in the dirt.

I’ve never been more openly vulnerable than when gaming with a buddy of mine. I swear we both know the ins and outs of each other’s personal drama without even intending to ever share it. Shit just came out on its own

It is almost as if this whole “face-to-face” thing that was brought up so much in the online meeting debate when companies insisted on video calls isn’t always as universally helpful as some people think. Almost as if human interactions are complex rather than simplistic.

I was gonna say, is this a whole community of people who have never heard of Dashboard Confessional?

Were they actually a niche band and I just assumed they were mainstream?

This is called triangulation! It’s when the focus is removed from the hard or vulnerable conversation, so it’s easier to have it.

That makes sense. A lot of difficult conversations have been had in bed, while looking at the ceiling or cuddling or in the dark altogether.
