Edit: I swallowed my pride and posted. Thanks for all the encouragement!
I am emigrating from the U.S. to the UK, where I have citizenship, because my daughter is queer and I don’t think she is safe under Trump. She won’t be totally safe in the UK either, I understand that, but it’s as safe as I can get her right now.
I want to get her out before inauguration day. My wife can leave later because she will need to both get our affairs back in the U.S. in order, but also find a job that will get her a work visa (this won’t be that hard, she has a ton of managerial experience and two masters degrees).
My issue is that I really want to have a job lined up before I get there. We’ll have some padding for a month or so, especially after I sell my car, and friends and relatives offering to help, but I would feel far more comfortable if I had a job lined up before I left.
So this brings me to Reddit and this subreddit in particular: https://www.reddit.com/r/UKJobs/
I haven’t posted on Reddit since I quit not long after the blackout. I hate it so much that this is my current profile:
So do I swallow my pride and go back? I’m going to hate myself but I am so worried and I need to keep her safe. I’m kind of at a crossroads here.
Maybe the ‘go back and do it’ is the obvious answer, but I need either reassurance or warnings from my fellow Lemmings before I do it because I’m really frozen at this point. I feel so silly asking this of all of you, but I don’t know who else to talk to about this because really, only people here in any large group will understand what I’m dealing with emotionally and psychologically.
Also, if you know anyone in the UK who needs a video editor, audio editor, sound designer, videographer, photographer and someone who has a lot of other entertainment experience with a prestigious list of clients, please don’t hesitate to let me know your email address in a PM and I’ll send you my CV.
Thanks.
News of your coming emigration is wonderful! I genuinely hope all goes smoothly and that you and your family do find that it’s a safer environment. Wishing you all the best and a brighter future. You’ll hear of us, I’m sure lol
Thanks very much. Really the only hurdle right now is my mother giving me shit constantly since she’s the only one (other than a truly insane friend of mine) who thinks we shouldn’t be doing this. She also seems to think this is an impetuous decision done out of panic rather than a strategic one we’ve been looking into since before the election.
Reddit is just a tool use it and then when you’re done using it, put it away.
A case in point - I enjoy playing a specific game (Destiny), the subreddit has 3.25 million subscribers and at any given time 500-1000 active users. There is just nowhere else to get the same amount of information (bugs, tips, latest news, etc.) than this community. If the UKJobs subreddit is like this, OP just needs to use it for what it is in their time of need.
The usage is important, finding a job in a foreign country is much more important than maintaining a protest that most people have probably forgotten about anyways.
Do what is best for you and your family.
Social network wars are way lower priority.
Just going to plus 1 what every one else is saying. We ditched reddit for various reasons, mostly about their business practices and exploitation, but this time you would be the one to benefit directly from utilizing it as a tool.
I totally agree to use it to help yourself and then toss it when you don’t need it. If it helps you feel any better use the website with an ad blocker, not the app, delete your interaction when you have a satisfactory conclusion, and think about it as taking advantage of spez by doing so, not being taken advantage of lol
Best of luck!
I’m glad I’m getting so much encouragement from everyone. I really need it. Thank you.
Just do what you have to do. Anyone that cares enough to stalk your accounts and even see that and call you out on it is an idiot who’s opinion isn’t worth shit anyway.
That’s true. Thanks.
We didn’t create this society, but we have to do our best to survive in it. Use the tools available to you - Reddit, LinkedIn, ChatGPT, etc. Take care of your family first.
Use it, and ditch it again when you’re done. I can tell you that the UK is, in general, a pretty safe place to be queer, especially in comparison to what’s going on over there. Like any country there are places which are more and less progressive in their opinions, but for the most part you can live your life without being in danger.
I don’t know if reddit is the best place for job hunting, you might get better luck on LinkedIn most likely, but I’d personally try everything if I were in a dire situation.
Just a couple questions, how long have you been job hunting? How many applications have you put out? In a post in that sub someone is complaining about not getting any answer after ‘50 applications in a month’, another one is already in despair after ‘4 days’… don’t get me wrong, I know how soul crushing job hunting is but it is a numbers game you can’t throw the towel after four bloody days ffs! 50 applications is just a good Tuesday, I’ve got calls more than a year after applying for a position…
Another question you should ask yourself is whether you are an expat or a migrant. Main difference between these is that migrants usually don’t see driving an Uber, laying bricks or serving tables as below them.
Anyway best of lucks and welcome to this side of the pond!
Ps: Oh! Also: wages! Their not American wages, CoL is lower but not by that much (some things like electronics, cars, gas… are in fact more expensive). A waiter in America (specially CA, I think I’ve read your from LA) makes more than most engineers here in Europe.
I have only been job hunting since the day after the election, but I am applying for every job I’m even remotely qualified for on every job board I can find, but like you said- this is dire and I’m trying everything.
Honestly, all I am worried about right now is finding a job that will let my daughter and I survive. I’ll worry about anything else later. Thanks.
You’re doing it right. Don’t desperate, mate. Most companies are permanently understaffed but management and hr drag their feet as much as they can, and then it’s all a rush. So at the end it’s a lottery. It sounds like you have quite the portfolio too so put it onto as many faces as you can and the calls and mails will come (and the spam! Use an alias, or a specific address unless you trust they’re not gonna sell it). You’ve got this.
Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement. I am definitely sending out CVs to anyone I can think of and applying to every job ad I’m remotely qualified for.
I did find out, however, why I’m glad I quit Reddit. I got some helpful replies and a bunch of assholes talking about how Trump won’t be that bad.
