Going back to Carter, the black vote has been instrumental for democratic wins across both coasts and throughout the urban metropoles of the Gulf Coast and Midwest. But the current Dem strategy has been to move away from their civil rights craving voter base and courting whiter, wealthier professional suburbanites. We’ve seen that most distinctly in MO-1, NY-16, MN-5, and MI-12, where democrat megadonors sunk millions to unseat popular minority incumbents for bucking the party line.
Far more worrying than these voters turning to Trump, in my mind, is for them to simply stay home. We’ve already seen an enormous chunk of Uncommitted Voter send shockwaves through the midwestern primaries in what should have been an uncontested coronation for Biden. With margins this thin, Dems are putting a lot of faith in wealthier, whiter conservatives filling in the gaps that these spurned younger poorer blacker voters are leaving.
