This is not a drill! Operation Moarteen proceeds and the next step is you signing up.

What happens next?

1) Sign-up

You fill out this form with your name, address, reddit user name, email address (You need to specify the email address linked to your paypal account, so we can link you to your payment.)

Why do we need all that information?

We use your reddit user name do determine your priority in case we need to set up a wait list (more on this later).

We use your email address linked to your paypal so we can request payment from you.

We communicate your shipping address to Ulrik together with your email address, so he can ship your Moarteen and send you tracking info.

2) Prioritisation

In the unlikely event that we hit the limit of 50 razors we will prioritise members based on how active they’ve been in this last inter-sub-exclusive interval. (Measured by (a) the number of sub-exclusive hardware group buys they’ve organised and (b) the number of comments posted between the announcement of Moar Boar on Fri Aug 5, 2022, 10:51:31 UTC and the announcement of Moarteen on Fri Sep 20, 2024, 06:26:15 UTC). This seemed fairer than a first-come-first-served list which would favour some time zones over others. Note that this prioritisation scheme automatically allocates the highest priority to the three members of the Project Moarteen Organising Committee (PMOC/OCPM), I hope that isn’t surprising to anyone)

People who don’t make in into the top 50 get put on a wait list for any spots that might open up.

3) Confirmation with Ulrik

Once we have a number, we make the final confirmation with Ulrik of Koraat and get a formal offer where we and he commit to the price. At this point, we will also know whether Ulrik managed to source the exact colour of the Moar Boar handle for the scales.

4) Down payment

Once you’ve made it on the list and Ulrik has confirmed, we will ask you for a down payment of EUR 25. The goal here is to avoid flakes like we had with Operation Moar Boar my forcing you to have some skin in the game when taking up a spot.

5) Production

Ulrik produces the razors. The estimated timeline is by end of the first quarter of 2025, but Ulrik said that it could be longer if we order closer to the end of this year.

6) Final invoice

Once Ulrik is done with the razors, he will invoice us. At this point, we will request payment from all of you for the remaining cost of the razor, shipping and the 5% flake buffer mentioned in the announcement.

7) Shipping and ensuing happiness

Ulrik ships the razors and wetshavedom rejoices.

Please put your questions, suggestions, and complaints in the comments here and we’ll address them. If any changes to the procedure outlined here should become necessary, we will try to stick to their intent and meaning as well as we can and communicate proactively.

My complaint is that I feel like if I use lemmy I’m helping the fragmentation of a key and useful community I care about. Can you solve that fir me?

    • First: Welcome back - it’s nice to see you here!

iCan you solve that for me?

This is an unsolvable problem, and the community that existed until last year on reddit doesn’t exist any more.

Realistically, r/wetshaving isn’t going away, nor is this place. On reddit, you’re the product, but here, you’re the boss (well, technically @walden@sub.wetshaving.social is the boss). And you can post on both places - that’s no crime.

      And what @djundjila@wetshaving.social said.

The way I see it you have two options:

      1. bitch about Reddit and its enshittification while doing nothing to help the situation
      2. help build and grow a welcoming alternative.

There is no rule that the community and Reddit have to be a package deal

You know me. I am slowly building up to killing my reddit account as I think that’s the only way I’ll stop getting drawn in. Last year’s LG was meant to be going out in a blaze of glory shit posting, but I chickened out.

        I’ll get there

Explain it to me and then maybe.

But also thrill ded and finances less than what they used to be so I may not be im unless I have the soaps already

            • We shave all together with the same soap on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Everybody proposes a soap, there is a vote, and the proposer rf the winning soap sends out smushes to everyone.

My soap won the vote for October. If you want to join, PM me your address, and I’ll send you the smush. You’re in the UK, if I remember correctly, so if I send the soap on Monday, it should arrive in time.

No financial commitment on your side, and I promise that I won’t out your identity.

Can you solve that fir me?

I think fragmentation in the community would only really be a factor if there was some sort of rift, and not from having options on where to post. A similar conversation has taken place on Discord, wondering if Discord was absorbing posts and content that should instead be put on Reddit. I don’t know the answer to that.

r/wetshaving lost some people during the enshitification of Reddit (the website, not the community). Freedberg comes to mind. I believe some people here are in the same boat, where they just decided they were done with their Reddit accounts.

So to me the question is, if Lemmy wasn’t here, would anybody start posting on Reddit again? I think the answer is no. I’m a hybrid, where I still post there from time to time and enjoy answering questions in the DQT, but I only post my SOTDs here for the most part, and sometimes in Discord. The reason for that is because I’m angry with Reddit, but recognize that I’m stuck using it :-)

Lemmy started as a quick alternative during the Reddit boycott, and has survived as just another place to post. If something happens with Reddit again, Lemmy is ready to go!

I feel like if I use lemmy I’m helping the fragmentation of a key and useful community I care about.

Welcome back! Good to see a familiar name over here again. In my honest opinion: as many members over here prove, you can be part of both Reddit and Lemmy without any harm done. Those of us who completely left Reddit behind - atm I only can think of @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social and myself - never did so with any negative intent towards the r/wetshaving community, but instead against the Reddit admins and their greed and power hunger. I hold no grudge against anyone on Reddit, overall it was one of the greatest communities I’ve ever been part of on a rather “toxic” website. The only reason I left Discord too was that I simply don’t have much time for it anymore and when I had some, my time zone made it hard to communicate with others in real time.

The way I personally see it: the old Reddit wetshaving community, pre-APIcalypse and Reddit forcing out third-party apps, is not the same anymore. A few of us left, some returned, but new active members joined. A lot of the “core group” of members never left either. But the idea of federated networks or the Fediverse is just too great to pass up: instead of being at the mercy of corporate overlords you can self-host and manage your own server/community. You can admin, you can mod… others from other servers can connect with yours, follow your topics and interact with your members. But no one gains a single €, $ or £ from it. No ads. No monetisation. Fewer bots. Tons of third-party apps to choose from.

The difference? Reddit wetshaving community still has DQ thread every day and much more interaction (the SOTD thread there can easily get 40 - 70 comments, we are lucky when it’s more than 20; even then, it’s mostly long conversations between our handful of members). Over here, it’s much more of a cozy place due to the “core group” being just fewer members in general. Occasionally we attract the rare poster from the wider fediverse, but unfortunately they’re often a one-and-gone deal. I kinda wish we had some more members as each different individual in this niche hobby brings their own unique perspective to the table; however, I really like our little group and the friendly atmosphere we built here. Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club (BVWSC) was the brainchild of PorkButtsNTaters666 and so far, it’s a great community activity that fits into everyone’s schedule and allows for the community spirit to flourish. In general, I don’t want to convert anyone to leave Reddit behind and join Lemmy - but anyone can gladly participate here too!

If you want to slowly move over, maybe begin by copy pasting your SOTD posts from Reddit and post them in our SOTD thread too. Join in on the BVWSC shave shenanigans. It’s fine, honestly. I for one would cherish if you decide to also be active over here - we definitely still have a lot of room for more members.

( Sorry dear @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social for hijacking your great organisation thread of this group buy effort. Not a SR user, so unfortunately not in - but best of luck in your endeavours!)
