I have a 2020 Jetta with 54k miles, breaks squeak now and dealership wanted $2100 to change all four brakes pads and rotors.

In the past with my older Honda civic (2004) I would just take it to a local DYI mechanic I know and buy the parts myself. This car has electronic parking and he didn’t want to mess with it.

No clue how much this is supposed to cost tbh

    I wouldn’t pay Mother Teresa $2,100 to replace pads and rotors on my vehicle. You should go somewhere else for this service, if you aren’t willing/able to do it yourself.

    Also, rotors DO NOT always have to be changed out. “Pad slaps” are acceptable if the rotor is in good condition AND still within minimum thickness spec. But they are an easy up-sell item because the owner usually doesn’t know any better. But at your mileage, it’s likely they are not even close to below minimum spec. Unless you’re a mail driver.

    If you buy the parts yourself (not at a dealership!!) - OEM VW pads are about $70 for the front. Rotor is about $73 each. Total up front and rear, you’re still less than $500.

    Or go with some good Wagner pads for about $30 per set.

      Rockauto is TRASH.

      They shipped me 2 power steering hoses that were both defective (missing fittings)

      Like they literally sent me some trash and charged more for the (non-refundable) overpriced shipping than the parts cost. I would have had to end up paying like 2.50 (and getting nothing returned) to send them back…

      Now I order off Amazon, sold & shipped by Amazon only tho. Kinda weary of third party sellers. Usually about the same price or within a couple bucks of rockauto. Sometimes like $3 cheaper or $2 more etc… But always 100% refund on anything I’m not satisfied with 😁

    That’s a “I don’t want to do it price” You can buy a OBD11 scan tool for $65 to retract the parking brake and a front and rear rotor and pad set from FCPEuro for $350.

      Are the calipers phenolic tho? Because phenolic are not supposed to be reused. Which means at minimum the caliper pistons/o-rings etc need to replaced also.

    For the money you can buy an Autel maxis scantool at about $400 it’s bidirectional so it can command brake service mode, then you buy pads and rotors and diy. I doubt it needs rears at threat mileage though.

    How many times do I have to tell you guys to stop taking your car is at her out of warranty to the dealership. They cost 2 to 3 times the price of an independent shop.

    I have a 2016 Jetta S and although I haven’t changed my brake pads yet, I was checking out some videos on how to do it and it looks like there’s nothing fancy going on.

    I’ve changed brake pads many times on my other cars and after looking at those videos, it looks like how I change brakes on my other cars.

    The dealership is probably also replacing the rotors but I’m going to get flack for this but I’ve just replaced the pads without changing or turning the rotors on my other cars and never had a problem. You probably want to get new rotors if you feel your brakes pulsing when coming to a stop which would indicate that one or more of the rotors are warped but if they feel fine, than just changing the pads should be fine.
