Hey everyone. I’m in the market for a new rugged off road capable vehicle. I’ve narrowed it down to both of these but can’t make up my mind. Why should I go with the Mazda over the Subaru? All opinions welcome!

    If you want a rugged off road car Subaru is the way to go. Their AWD technology is unmatched and they are just more outdoorsy, they have more outdoor mods then Mazda and is just more comfortable vehicle.

    It’s pretty simple.

    Both are good cars but the mazda is more sporty(at least it creates the atmosphere for it) and more on the street while the subaru is more confortable(of the two, suspension wise) and more off road capable.

    Cannot miss with either, both are reliable but that is kinda the difference.

    Also i don’t understand why people keep complain about cvt (even thou they never had one) because subaru never had problems, at least in the last 10 years.

    I had a 2017 Forester XT and a 2022 CX-5 Turbo simultaneously. The Forester was $3k less on paper and it felt like the Mazda interior was 2x the price.

    I love Mazda and always recommend them to friends. But if you need the most off road capability, the Outback is the right choice here. The CX-50 won’t be able to keep up with it off road.

    Im surprised it took this long to get this response. I’ve been waiting. Of course I expected a bias. But I was hoping to hear more first person perspective of ownerships, not hypotheticals really. But I have learned a lot so I am grateful

    If outdoor capabilities is your number one differentiator, the Subie makes more sense.

    If you’re willing to go from a best in class on that metric to a capable alternative in order to gain a better interior, better reliability and less finicky maintenance, then the Mazda makes more sense.

    Both are good cars.

    There are only two reasons I would consider the Outback over the CX-50, headroom and off road ability. The Outback (especially the Wilderness) has more off-road focused features. I haven’t seen a head to head comparison, but Subaru has much more experience here.

    Otherwise, the interior quality on the CX-50 is in another class. The engine is pretty well proven, and the transmission (though a little dated) is still preferable over the CVT.

      I recommend sitting in a top trim outback if u haven’t seen how nice Subaru interiors have gotten. I’ve sat in both and the Mazda is nice don’t get me wrong. But it’s not better than the outback.

    As a biased Mazda fanboy: The Outback sounds better for your case.

    Comfier ride, better off-road, better back seats.

    Mazda is more about on-road fun and bang for buck luxury :)

    I’ve owned multiple Mazdas and Subarus

    Personally…I prefer how the CX-50 looks but I find the Outback to be much more comfortable. The Outback will be a better cruiser and the CX will feel more connected/like a drivers car
