Ok folks, I have a manual 96 pickup XE. The trans number is FS5W71C. We blew the trans in the 96 beyond repair (twisted cluster shaft in two). After MUCH research and looking, I settled on a transmission from an 89’. Same part number, bolted up to the engine fine, front driveshaft fit fine, only hiccup was needing the tail shaft from the 89 on the driveshaft for the 96. Put a new clutch in beforehand as well. All is well, only thing not done are the electrical plugs (they’re on the way). I expected it would still go into gear and drive without the electricals since it’s a manual and I just wanted to check my work. I start it, put it into gear, take my foot off the clutch and…nothing. It doesn’t die, but won’t drive. Engine revs, won’t drive. It is going into gear, you can tell because you cannot push it while it’s in gear.
My ideas are that either somehow the ecu won’t let it drive because no sensors are plugged in yet (feels unlikely because it’s a manual but I’m amateur in electronics really) OR that the clutch isn’t fully bled so it’s not engaging enough.
Any ideas?
Not that it’s ever happened to me a bunch of times 😏 but is the parking brake on? Really it should die if you release the clutch pedal but dont give it gas. Definitely shouldn’t be going into forward gears without pressing the clutch pedal either. Something’s not right. Trans is full of fluid? Clutch master/slave cylinders full of fluid and bled properly? FWIW I’m not an expert with your exact trans but manuals all basically work the same. Good luck!
