I paid $692 for my original 512GB Steam Deck in April from the official store. Now people are selling them for around $300? I’d be at a nearly $400 loss just to upgrade the model I’ve had less than a year. I’m just baffled since I’m sure many other people bought it at a similar price and are upgrading it right away. Not sure if it’s because of all the FOMO here or what.

Just wait til steam deck 2 drops quicker then expected and all these fomo buyers are gonna be taking another loss to sell their oled.

In a way steam is kind of forced to get something out quicker because competition is coming and higher performance is getting cheaper and cheaper. ROG ally and Legion Go is a good example of this competition. Most handheld pcs with their specs were $1100+ until they came out.

Steam doesn’t have the benefit someone like Nintendo has, who controls massive IPs on their platform. Hence why Nintendo can get away with selling a 6 year old glorified android tablet with an oled screen for $350. Anybody with a handheld pc can run steam and steam games.

Valve doesn’t give a shit since most people are going to buy games from Steam no matter what device they have. Before the Deck even came out Valve was saying they hope other manufacturers jump on board and make their own versions.

Deffo. 12 months and a new faster machine will come. Hopefully smaller. The Deck mini will come first then the Deck 2. OLED is lovely but not worth it IMHO.

Honestly the upgrade has been worth it to me. Screen is beyond better quality, and battery life is much longer than the LCD. I get not wanting to take a loss but I feel I got my money’s worth by paying the $250 difference.

For me it’s just that the OLED screen is that much better and I know what I’m getting since I already have Switch OLED. Also getting new tech is nice :)
