Wassup yall,I have an 87 Ram 50 with a 360 v8 and 727 transmission swap. Its an actual turd and tops out at 50 mph with very high rpm’s.Could changing the gear ratio help? If it helps at all the rear tires are larger than the fronts.I’ve never messed with gears so I’m asking here. Thanks guys

Changing the gear ratio could help, if that’s the problem. Is the transmission shifting through all of the gears? Do you know what gear ratio is in the differential(s). If it’s 4wd, you will have to match the gear ratio in the front and rear differentials.

Yeah it shifts through all 3,It has the wrong kickdown cable so the shift points are a little high but it shifts fine.I’m not sure what gears it has,How would I go about figuring that out?

I was told the previous owner was building it out to drag race but he did a half ass job and sold it to me,So I’m in the process of fixing everything

I guess I would start with the procedure someone else mentioned to figure out the gear ratio of the rear end

Lift the rear end up, put the truck in neutral, and count roughly how many times the driveshaft spins a full rotation to the number of times it takes a wheel to do one full rotation.

I stole this from another forum:

3.545 used in certain 2 wd trucks and 1st Gen 4wd trucks with a MA904 Automatic transmission let you achieve optimal fuel mileage

3.909 most common gear ratio used in about our trucks most 4 X 4 came with them for sure

If it takes approx. 3.5 DS rotations would be a 3.55

Closer to 4 full DS rotations would be 3.91
