Friend's wheel just "exploded" after he lent the car to someone else. Looks like a clean cut. Is it possible for a wheel to explode like this?

Title says it all. I’ve never seen one blow up like this. Is it possible?

That is either from a large pothole or a curb. That is a slice not a blowout.
