Friend's wheel just "exploded" after he lent the car to someone else. Looks like a clean cut. Is it possible for a wheel to explode like this?

Title says it all. I’ve never seen one blow up like this. Is it possible?

Look at the mark on the wheel just below it. Think they slammed into a curb and ripped it open.
