Zaza and Baggio’s are the two I normally think of. Both basically sending Italy out of two major tournaments.

Obviously Baggio is iconic, but as an Italian I would point at the two missed penalties of Evaristo Beccalossi against Slovan Bratislava. Missing two pens in a game is a big deal but not a unique case, but the Paolo Rossi (the comedian, not the player) monologue about that story makes is very much iconic.

Freely translating the intro of the monologue:

"This monologue is dedicated to two of the biggest untapped talents in world culture, who made some of us - even if losers - to think to be meant for a future victory.

These two talents in the fields of culture, music, art, evolution in general, to me are Charlie Parker and Evaristo Beccalossi.

I get that maybe many of you don’t know who Charlie Parker was, so I’m going to explain who Beccalossi was."

One that’s very popular cause it ends in a rival’s goal is Leicester vs Watford in the 2013 Championship Play-Off. Idk what Leicester player misses but then is a counter attack and Deeney gives Watford the victory.

I am going to hijack this comment to put out there that just a couple of weeks before this, Doncaster did exactly the same thing away at Brentford, although the consequences were much more signficant.

The goal sent Doncaster up as Champions and denied Brentford automatic promotion. Link here

Watford didn’t even go up that season after going through against Leicester.

For me growing up as an Arsenal fan, it has the be the Henry and Pires shambles. I felt embarrassed just watching it.

Definitely not of all time, it didn’t have a huge significance, but the first thing that popped into my head when I read the question

But then he scored a panenka penalty against Portugal that same year to make Spain get into the Euro 2012 final, he would later in 2016 score another penalty in the penalty shootout in the UEFA Champions League Final (he was the man of the match that day as he scored the first goal of the final), Griezmann missed a penalty in that match and then Juanfran missed his penalty in the shootout. I’m pretty sure Atleti fans still remember those two misses.

Not the most iconic, but one I think of is the ball Kane sent to the moon against France

CR7’s miss against Bayern in the UCL semi-final, this match proved that CR7’s not the GOAT everyone thinks he is

In Wales, it’s Paul Bodin vs Romania.

It’s 1-1 in the 2nd half in a winner takes all match - with the victor heading to the USA for the 1994 World Cup - when Wales are awarded a penalty.

If Wales score it, we go 2-1 up and probably go on to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, our first major tournament since 1958. As it was, Bodin misses, Romania go on to win and secure qualification themselves in front of a stunned Cardiff Arms Park crowd, and a truly great Welsh team with the likes of Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Neville Southall and Dean Saunders miss out on the big stage.

That night ended in tragedy off the pitch too, with a Welsh fan firing a distress flare across the pitch at full-time, hitting and killing fellow Welsh fan John Hill.

We wouldn’t come so close for another 28 years, when we beat Ukraine and made it to the 2022 World Cup, our first appearance in 64 years.
