Looking at getting a noco genius10 to charge my 2014 Toyota Yaris but I’m getting mixed answers on where to connect the negative terminal.

Manual says to connect negative to chassis, but all the videos I’ve seen connect it direct to battery.

Related question: there is the option for hardwire/ring terminals which connects that directly to the battery terminals. How is that different from clamping direct to battery? Assuming sparking issue.

most of the time the LAST Connection with jumper cables or battery chargers is done with the negative cable to the chassis or engine… so its NOT close to the battery… less chance of a hydrogen gas spark blowing the top off the battery.

batteries when charging and discharging create hydrogen gas…

when the top blows off. it also splatters Sulfuric acid all over…

i have had a battery blow up on me… threw my hands over my eyes as i was out in the sun… other employees got me to the eye wash sink in amazingly fast time… i did not know if the sun and the acid would react even faster… my eyes were burning until it got water in them… 15 minutes of water flow…

early morning… below freezing. at a gas station in bellingham washington. the early morning guy went out to the far island to help a customer get his vw bug restarted… he decided to pop the covers off the battery… he could not see in… so he used his pocket lighter… BOOM… acid all over him. the customer guided him in to the wash sink… the interior of the VW was covered in sulfuric acid… we did not have but a partial box of baking soda to sprinkle around…

the battery was probably frozen… it was down around 10F that morning…

    use care…

    with a multimeter…

12.65 volts is a fully charged battery after using just the headlights for a minute. then turning them off…

    12.45 volts is a 3/4 charged battery…

12.25 volts is half charged battery…
