I have been working on gasoline engines since my dad showed me how to adjust a 2 stroke lawnmower engine in the early 70s Fast forward - I was doing an oil change on my car and the oil pan plug crush washer was toast and I forgot to refill my toolbox stock so I had no new crush washer - I was in a time pinch and noticed a roll of gas and oil pipe thread seal tape I had leftover from a gas pipe project to my gas grill - I looked up the specs - good for natural gas - and oil to 500 degrees - I put three wraps on the drain plug and proceeded as normal - I’ve added that to every oil change over the last 30 years and never worried about crush washers since. Just last year my daughter now in her 30s says she had her oil changed at the dealer - they gave her a hard time about the thread tape - I told her don’t worry about it - but now I wonder if I have been doing it all wrong the past 30 some years ?? Has anyone else used the yellow Teflon tape this way ? Its made by Oatley - I buy it in the plumbing dept at Lowe’s
Just get a drain plug and never have to worry about gaskets and torque
I used that trick many years ago. Now I replace the washer or the plug, depending on the car. I buy in bulk.
i mean since its not a tapered plug its pretty worthless to put tape on the threads and a chance of tape fragments of it getting sucked into or against the oil pump screen.
i cant say ive ever replaced a crush washer or anything and also havent had leaks…
I hear you there - that’s why I only wrap 1/2 of the drain plug threads and the shoulder - maybe I’m just an old man stuck in my ways 🤔
