My 2013 VW Golf TSI isnt running properly, jumpy, stalling. Mechanic says that tip of spark plug has broken off and fallen into cylander leading to multiple misfires and he can’t assess scale of damage without taking off cylander head (3-4 hours labour minimum) Says best case scenario he’ll have to replace part of engine if not whole thing given likely damage caused by broken part flying around while engines been running. Sounds bad, any advice?

If they have a camera they can likely remove the plug and look into the cylinder. News probably won’t be great, but you may avoid 3-4 hours of un-needed inspection.

My shop currently has an Audi A3, with likely the same 2.0L, that the customer had installed champion plugs in. The champion plug failed (no surprise) much like the one in your car did. Took out the piston, ruined cylinder walls etc. We recommended a new engine.

Find a mechanic with a compression gauge and an inspection camera before pulling the head.
