So ive bought all the parts to manual swap my E46, the manual transmission is easily liftable but im not sure how to move the heavier automatic transmission (zf5hp19) onto a car trunk for disposal. for those with some experience in this regard, will I need hulk strength or is it possible to lift it?

I know a dude that I’ve seen, no joke, He, with one hand, put it into place on a car with one hand while using an impact with the other. He’s a freaking beast, but I have a feeling you or I aren’t that strong. Get someone to help!

It’s not even really the weight. It’s more of how awkward it is to hold. Two guys can handle it easily. I can say I’ve lifted a ranger transmission by my self but I’m 6 ft 300lbs. Not above my head but up off a trans jack and a new one back up. Roughly similar for size.

Get a good hand hold on the top of the bellhousing, other hand on the output shaft flange, good deadlift form, straight back, lift with your legs… aaand the output shaft rotates suddenly so you drop it on the concrete floor.

If you take the torque converter out first you can lift them a lot easier. You can’t do that with installing but you certainly can to move them around.

I haven’t pulled the automatic out yet, but yes I will be swapping with a manual. thankfully its much easier putting the manual trans in.

If you’re by yourself… I’d say go ahead and get ANGRY. Or improvise and you can make it happen… a little harder to get it out… me personally I would just take it apart gives you a better knowledge of the “way things work” & it’s also much easier to move.

Use an engine hoist honestly so that you can easily control placing it in the trunk.

You’ll also want to make sure the transmission is fully drained of ATF otherwise you are in for one gigantic mess.
