    Realistically, busting City down to League 2, or the Conference or whatever would probably herald in the Super League, as they’d just use their money to circumvent the punishment altogether. The Spanish clubs still really want it, and I’m sure it would take little to no pressure to bring Italy and PSG on board.

    The way football has skewed towards money in recent years has really affected the ability of the governing bodies to meaningfully control clubs, and it would only take one serious refusal (like trying to make arguably the biggest club in the world play in the 4th division) for the charade to drop all together.

    Italy managed it years ago because the clubs lacked the financial backing to go it alone. That’s not the case now.
