It’s always nice to write new stories and see history made, so Messi finally winning the WC was great but I want more, the fans want excitement and upsets so when will we get that?

The last new nation to win either was Portugal in Euro 2016 I think, and its definitely the tournament that lends itself to more potential for a brand new winner. But what about the world cup, when will we see a new country win it? is it one of those impossible to tell things as it just happens when it happens?

It’ll be easier at the Euros. If anything because England has never won it and they are now having a strong generation of young players. So it’s possible that they’ll win it sooner rather than later. Plus, the Euros is more open than the WC for potential underdogs. There could always be a dark horse winner outside of the potential favourites. However, the perennial candidates have all already won at least once (besides England), so it’ll have to be something like Denmark 92 or Greece 04, totally unpredictable.

In the World Cup is more difficult to imagine a new winner soon, imho. In Europe the one perennial candidate for victory is the Netherlands but I don’t see them winning it anytime soon (sorry Dutch fans). Outside of Europe I don’t think there’s a team that can pull it off yet. An Asian or African winner will happen, but I don’t think it’ll happen soon.

England is like PSG. All star players which doesn’t make it to the end. I’ve heard that narrative way too many times that they have the talent to make it all the way through.

Totally agree with the rest though Euro easier to have an underdog story.

We will get an asian winner when Fifa changes the rules so that Saudi can buy players for the National team.

Euros. For starters it’s next year. It being sooner than the next WC automatically makes it more likely.

But it also seems like underdogs have historically done better in the Euros than the WC.

Yes, the Euro was won by underdogs a few times, the world cup never, even when Uruguay or West Germany won it in 1950 and 1954, they weren’t underdogs, it’s just that the other team they faced was the big favourite and it was a shock

I like your mathematical approach :)

And for the underdogs in Euros: the lowest rated teams in the Euros are normally on a much higher level than the lowest tier in the WC. That makes the group stages more random, always eleminating some of the favourites and it also ensures the favourites more seldom can rotate / rest their key players, so in the later stages the odds are more even oppening for more surprise wins.

By enlarging the Euros they have now somewhat negated that fact, so it is (imo) quite even which finals have the highest chance/risk of having underdogs win. Hence your mathematical “Euros is first” is probarbly the most correct answer 🤣

I think the World Cup just because of Portugal and the rise of African nations But Portugal has one of the top 5 squads in the world in my opinion, and in 2 years a lot of young players will be better, and the only aging players they have right now are Pepe and Ronaldo So I would back Portugal to have a strong claim in 2026 and be a new winner

Let’s look recently at Denmark, Greece, even a weaker than now Portugal…

    So…Euros for sure.

In the World Cup, only Netherlands has a real chance of being a new champion in the next decades. Belgium missed theirs in 2018.

Nah, i’d say Belgium has a decent chance as well. The new team is doing great and Belgium has a pretty good history at the world cup

      14 appearances, 2 Semi-finals, a bunch of quarter finals…

There’s definitely a chance Belgium can win a WC in the next decades.

Portugal has never won the WC and the football culture and talent are as alive as ever.

Croatia keeps making deep runs even with only OK squads on paper.

Morocco has a great core and play as a team.

I could see an underdog winning the WC just as easily as the Euro.

My bad…I had the impression Portugal won World Cup, that’s why I didn’t include them in the New Potential Winners.

If England ever decide to hire a competent manager, then the Euros would certainly be achievable.

I was going to comment how unlikely that is and how even though they were in the final of the last world cup they didn’t look that fantastic.

But then I remembered they have been in the last 2 world cup finals and the 2016 euro finals.

Since England now has a decent team, they can win Euro. But African countries mostly Nigeria and Camaroon can win the world cup in the next few editions.
