Nissan’s profit zoomed up more than 10-fold in July-September from a year earlier, boosted by a weak Japanese yen and strong vehicle sales around the world. The Japanese automaker, allied with Renault SA of France, reported a 190.7 billion yen ($1.3 billion) profit in the last quarter, up from 17.4 billion yen the year before. Quarterly sales surged 25% to 3.15 trillion yen ($20.9 billion), the company said Thursday.
Say what you will about Nissan, but they’re one of the few mainstream companies still making practical - and affordable - cars. You can buy a Nissan Frontier at or under MSRP and get an uncomplicated pickup that isn’t saddled with touchscreen only controls or an insane markup.
Same for the Sentra and Altima. Memes aside, if you need an A-to-B car with no BS they’re a good choice right now.
We just rented a new Sentra and were pleasantly surprised. Quiet, just enough power, comfortable, good fuel economy, decent set of features. I’d consider one if I was in the market.
i saw a new sentra in black the other day and it surprised me how much i liked the looks of it…if you can get a good deal on one it’s probably a solid commuter, i haven’t heard of catastrophic nissan issues for a few years now honestly.
The current sentra is WAY nicer than it has any right to be. The interior is fantastic for what it is.
We rented one for a trip from Tennessee to Cincinnati and loved it. It was very comfortable, responsive steering, and great on gas (We averaged 45 MPG round trip!).
We would have considered buying one but the CVT horror stories made me nervous; from what I’ve read though the latest Sentra has a revised CVT that’s supposed to be less problematic.
Dunno about the US but in Canada they’re one of the few brands whose prices haven’t gone crazy in the past few years, both in terms of price increases on a given model and trim, and in terms of not phasing out their basic economy offerings.
And you didn’t even mention the Rogue. Super spacey and incredible fuel economy for a nonhybrid.
Frontiers have always been the most solid Nissan cars. Especially since the invention of the CVT. Solid trucks and can be had without shelling out $50k.
Although I wish Nissan cared enough to keep their lead when it came to electrification. Would’ve killed for a Frontier PHEV.
I wish they would have continued their efforts to revive the Datsun brand in the USA. Reviving a 100% bare bones cheap car like the 510 would have been great/affordable for those that just need baseline transportation.
If they’d just replace the CVT with a 6 speed auto…

For a reasonably priced daily driver that fits my 6’5” frame I like it a lot. I bought mine new in 17 and try to baby it the best I can. The CVT tissues were supposed to be resolved in 13 but my solenoid shorted out, I’m wondering if that was the result of hitting a few huge puddles though.
I had a bad experience with the headlight housing recall, my dealer never said my headlights were dim enough to qualify. By now the recall has expired but I’m positive they aren’t as bright as they should be.
I’d rather buy a Subaru than a Nissan.
This is really the truth. Ive rented several Nissans in the past few months. They are not the car for me. However, I would say they are the best appliance cars on the market today. As long as their CVTs hold up, these cars give you what you really need and want without the frills of other manufacturers. Nissan is the epitome of shit box and that isn’t necessary a bad thing.
