It’s a service report from January this year of a 2016 1.8 Audi TT TFSI sport that I’m looking to buy, however I’m not sure about the wording of this report in terms of the ‘front brake discs slightly lipped’ and ‘rear discs corroded’, as it then goes on to advising changing at 100,000 miles (car is currently at 74k) - but is this just referring to the screen wash and spark plugs?

Should the discs be done much sooner? I’ve read that brake discs can be slightly lipped and cause no problem until they begin nearing their minimum thickness, as well as rusted discs not being a major issue and can be rectified with more frequent car use? But I really don’t know anything about this myself, so just wanted some clarification before potentially buying this car

Brake totors need to be changed at some point. It’s not about miles as more use might even help. Sometimes I’ve said maybe after a year or something like that depending on use.

Screenwash is something that you add before it runs out. 100k miles is for the rest.

    Whoever wrote this is a moron. Make it legible on documents, chicken scratch for personal notes. But I’m a bit of a chicken scratcher myself, allow me to clarify;

He’s basically just notating what he observed on the car, everything is normal condition.

Front brakes lipped (no one uses that term anymore) just means your pads wore into your rotors and developed an edge (lip) because they’re getting a little thin. All cars do it over years. Can be measure when you go to a tech.

Rear brakes corroded - like every friggin 5+ year old car out there. But worth having a closer look because he didn’t specify if it was the rotor or the pad. Can be reviewed by a decent tech.

Screen wash not added, full - just means he didn’t top off the washer fluid because it was already full. Can still be topped off by an attractive tech.

Spark plugs not pitted - means that the porcelain on the spark plugs is okay for now, you’ll make it to 100k miles. (I guess he didn’t check the important part) can be checked by a cool tech.

Sounds like the car is in just normal condition. Will need normal maintenance. But you’re getting my point, right? Hire a regular tech/mechanic. It’s like having a doctor.

Let me know if you have other questions.

    Best of luck.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your reply - I really appreciate it. Your opening sentence made me laugh out loud.

100% agree - for someone like myself who has limited knowledge on these things, being unable to even read everything that has been advised makes matters much trickier.

Your response was timed perfectly to help me understand what was actually being advised, and reassured me a great deal (as I was panicking I was going to have to fork out for 4 new brake discs shortly after buying the car).

I went ahead and bought the car today, and I’m really pleased that I did. Your advice about having a regular tech/mechanic has also been well noted - I will be asking for recommendations locally to find a trustworthy and decent independent mechanic.

      Thanks again :)

He is alerting you to forthcoming issues. The front rotors are wearing, which is normal and ok as long as they havent worn past minimum thickness. The rears are corroded which may not be ok come MOT time. He hasnt added any windscreen wash fluid because the reservoir is full. He hasnt fitted spark plugs because the car hasnt done enough miles to yet need them. They will need fitted at 100k miles.

Thanks a lot for the info - I went ahead and bought the car today and the dealership is having an MOT done for me on Monday. They have said they will pay for any work that needs doing if it fails for any reason.

I also brought my Dad along with me to view the car, and he has assured me the corroded discs don’t look any worse than your average… Fingers crossed everything is as it should be
