my 2002 Honda Accord’s brakes gave out yesterday and there’re so many problems with it already so I figured I’d just upgrade. I have a budget of 5,000 (broke college student) 😔 what’s a reliable car that isn’t ugly lol.

Most Hondas or Toyota in that price range will serve you best. The term Kaizen is appropriate here. It’s the reason their cars last so song. They use the same switches with minor refinements over the decades but still reliable and improved over time.
There’s another term they have that escapes me but it’s along the lines of monotunikin.
It means they use the same 4.0 motor in the Tacoma/4Runner for 20’years with simple advancements/improvements over that time.
Ford seems to have a new shit motor every year and then the techs can’t fix em because they are all so new.
They have to get engineers involved which gate keeps techs from going out on their own. My $.02
