Exciting news for who? Only the site owner is excited that a free resource now requires a subscription
“Yay! Now I have to pay another subscription! I’m so excited! Let’s celebrate with them!” - nobody
How the fuck are they “open”?
These guys and ClosedAI should be sued for misleading advertising.
Opensubtitles.com API is open and free. They are talking about Opensubtitles.org. People seem to really struggle when it comes to reading that 3rd sentence.
Open… for business!
well the old api is deprecated.
what you’re paying here for is continued support of otherwise redundant part of the website, if you’re not willing to upgrade to the new one. The new API is free just like the old oneOpen is not a regulated term. Any company can call themselves open regardless of anything.
Any service that is subscription based is dead to me. I’ve reached my breaking point.
Subscription based services are okay. You pay for water, electricity, maybe a gym membership…
What’s not okay is that they paint it as “exciting news!”
Assholes.
Water should not be profit driven.
You’re right. I guess I meant to say water distribution services. Utilities.
Water and electricity are not subscription based.
Do you not make a monthly payment for water and power? If not, then where do you live so that I move there?
There’s a difference between paying for usage and paying for access.
Although with all the fees added, most of what you pay isn’t even usage anymore…
You pay for water, electricity, maybe a gym membership…
I don’t think you should have to pay for any of this
Not in 2023, no. True.
You know, it wouldn’t be as bad if they weren’t trying to make it look like a good thing that takes it from just bad to insulting
No it is, it’s very exciting, for their investors/owners i.e. the only people who matter obv

Is the new rest api free?
Yes
So I’m not super familiar with OpenSubtitles as an org.
Is the REST API a mostly viable alternative to the legacy API, or is it really shitty by comparison?
