If the VAR calls the ref over to the sidleine to have a look, the ref SHOULD feel free to override whatever the VAR referees thinks they saw. If there is any question, they should pull the head ref over. Yes, maybe it slows down the game. The type of bullshit we’ve seen with Liverpool and Arsenal just CANNOT happen in a professional league.
No more of this we ref comes over only to validate what the VAR is ruling. Head Referee should be ultimately responsible for all calls.

Dude puts two hands into the defender and has the ball careen off his arm to a guy who is offside… time to get head ref in there to make that call.
Ya one big issue with VAR, that we’ve confirmed based off comments from current and former refs, is this passing off of responsibility to the other party.
The on field officials seem to think “well I’ve got VAR watching my back. Better not make that call, and let them call it back if a foul occurred.” Meanwhile, the VAR bros are saying “we don’t want to undermine our mates decision on the field. Better not call anything here.”
It’s a complete passing of the buck, and a detriment to the game. And the fact that officials have been so open about this shows their lack of caring to change it, or their complete inability to realize the harm to the game that it causes
There is only one referee, and the rest are there to advise the ref. I’ll keep saying it - if it takes them more than 15-20 seconds to discuss the situation, ref has to got to the monitor.
When the ref just stands there and listens to whatever story the tell them, it’s easier to pass the buck. If the ref goes and sees the replay, they have actually made use of VAR, not just had a little chat with their work colleague.

It was an absolute bull shit call that a foul wasn’t called on Gabriel, and even more outrageous Bruno UFC forearmed Jorgi in the skull, and that Callum Wilson throat slammed Gabriel to the floor.
I really don’t get why the ref should come all the way to the side of the pitch just to look at the screen and stall the game for like 10 minutes. They could’ve strapped a smartphone to his arm or thigh, which can show the footage for him to see. Provided it doesn’t have a big screen like the one we have currently, but almost anyone can see almost anything perfectly through a full HD iPhone 15 screen anyway. The ref rarely suffer from contact, unlike the players, so there should be no health hazard either. Wonder why a multi billion enterprise could not afford some of its most important employees better work equipment.
Or make it simple. Do it like rugby. They show the best angles on the big screens which jas every single stadium in PL. Fans see it. Ref ses it. He gets clue in his ear What they think they see and he is watching as they comment along.

The fact they put independent in the name shouldn’t distract from the fact the panel is made up a a member of PGMOL, a member of EPL (which owns the PGMOL) and three anonymous ex players. It is funded by the EPL which, in case you missed it, owns PGMOL. So the panel is “independent” in the same sense that Alan Shearer is a hairdresser or Apple computers are made of fruit.
