Ok this is water under the bridge but here’s how it seems to me. The asst ref on the near sideline is unsure if the ball has gone out of play so they keep their flag down - thinking VAR will review and correct it if needed - Stuart Attwell doesn’t blow for the shove on XL Gabi thinking that VAR will review it in slo-mo - nor does he blow for the Joelinton handball cuz VAR is sure to review from multiple perspectives and finally sideline rev doesn’t raise their flag for offsides cuz VAR is going to draw lines more accurately… It seems like pitch side officials no long want to make a decision in real time - and VAR is not infallible - so we have to anxiously live with this beast called VAR praying that PGMOL either embraces more technology quickly - or forgets about the whole thing.

Don’t make a call to use var as a safety net, then var stands with a call saying they don’t want to overturn on field decisions. Laughable how this hasn’t been addressed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they just didn’t see the handball because Gabriel was obscuring his arm and Newcastle players back was to linesman but otherwise completely agree. Just passing the buck
