This post is obviously inspired by today’s game (wtf was that??), but what are the games that truly amazed you, even if your favorite time team didn’t play? Let me start with several examples, some of which are not from the EPL:
- Man Utd 4:3 Man City (2009) - an insane encounter and it always felt United couldn’t win, but they did, and that Owen goal was awesome!
- Netherlands 2:3 Czech Republic (EURO 2004) - if you didn’t watch this one, you should! Robben still had hair and it was one of the most magnificent games of football I’ve ever seen!
- Alaves 4:5 Liverpool (UEFA Cup Final 2001) - I’ve never thought I would be that heartbroken for a team I’ve never watched before!
- Milan 3:3 Liverpool (the Miracle of Istanbul) - obviously.
- Crystal Palace 3:3 Liverpool (2014) - Liverpool went 3 up and decided they should try to erase a -8 goal difference to catch Man City. They paid the price, but damn, the game was worth watching!
- Blackpool 4:3 Bolton Wanderers (2011) - omfg, Ian Holloway’s Blackpool were entertaining as fuck, how I wish they stayed for at least another season … this game is probably my favorite from a season that featured a bunch of great matches.

City vs Madrid 5-6 in the UCL semi final 2 seasons ago. First legs was just straight up ridiculous, and the second leg had one of the best comebacks I’ve ever seen

Ajax beating both Real Madrid and Juventus in the 2018/19 UCL (and their games against Bayern in the group stage were solid too.)

Preparing to be crucified as a Man United fan

But Liverpool vs City 4-3 back in 2018.

I watched the match with my brother and his friends who are all Liverpool fans (we are in Australia so it was a late night for us).

The attacking prowess of Salah, Firmino and Mane in their prime was box office, and to see City come storming back into the game almost on demand was a truly entertaining experience.

A few seasons ago when city won the league. There was a period of two weeks where they played Tuchels Chelsea and got a 1-0 win then went to Liverpool and I think they won 2-1. They still stick in my mind as my favourite two weeks of football, we beat Sp*rs in the derby in a great game, I seem to remember a wolves match that was a blinder, but those two performances from City were extra ordinary. Super tight, tactical affairs, played at such a crazy high intensity. Gabi with an incredible performance and winner against Chelsea and Foden balling out against Liverpool. Peak Prem football.

How could you forget! One of my favorite games of all time, such a joy to watch both team going for it from the first minute to the every last.

This is a pretty random one: Leicester 4-2 Man City. Leicester not so much defending their title as fighting relegation while everyone was doubting Guardiola with his relatively hodge-podge City team.

Personally, I’d just finished A’Levels and was up late gaming that Saturday night. I didn’t even know the game was happening but decided to tune in to whatever random game was happening. Turns out it was this one. Stopped my game and thought “Interesting teams, this could be fun”

Oh boy it was. Leicester 2-0 up inside 5 minutes, Andy King with a wonderful goal. At HT it’s 3-0. Vardy ends up with a hat-trick (third goal was tight on the goal line). Man City pulled two goals back at 4-0 down. I’m checking the game history now and see Kolarov scored too, so it was probably a free kick.

Not the biggest game by any means, but a nice late-night surprise.
