Okay so as im playing the community shield on fifa and im wonderinger. Why do a lot of people (fans, pundits) write off the community shield as a meaningless trophy or a just a friendly? I mean it the English Supercup, winner of the league vs winner of the domestic cup. Every other league seems to care about Supercups and theres also the important European Supercup.
It is just a glorified friendly. Matters way less than the Carabao cup.
It’s a little more serious than a friendly though it’s nothing seriously noteworthy. Winner of the league and FA Cup trading blows for bragging rights and bonus silverware as a pre-game to the league is slightly interesting; like an appetizer but still boring since nothing is stake. Seems like people who like watching the games for games sake enjoy this.
I think it’s only ever remotely interesting if it’s actually winner of the cup vs winner of the league
When a team can win that without winning a proper trophy, then yeah it’s tinpot. If the same team wins both then they should have last year’s winner or something
Any one off game can’t really be anything more than a glorified exhibition in my eyes, when the pool of potential winners is 2 sometimes 1 then yeah bit pointless.
Only if you lose. If you win it’s a competitive match.
It’s big enough to be mentioned by literally every single club’s honours lists so I’d count it as a trophy, just one that we all agree is the least important out of all affiliated trophies available to top flight clubs. Call it the Super Cup like every other European Nation and it wouldn’t sound quite as low-key as it does. Not sure why charity’s receiving some income from the game as well makes any difference to its reputation.
Depends on if you win
It’s only important if you win it, otherwise it’s a meaningless pre-season friendly 😂
I mean it’s before the actual premier league season starts, so to many football hasn’t actually ‘started’ yet. Obviously we don’t share the same idea when it comes to international tournaments because those come every 4 years and it’s a special occasion since the whole nation will get together to watch.
Bigger than a friendly but much smaller than a real trophy
It depends on who wins it.
Yes. It used to be called the charity shield.
It’s kind of its own thing imo. I’d say it’s more important than any given prem game (although even that is controversial) but it’s smaller than a cup final for any other trophy.
Arsenal fans, would you trade the community shield for a guaranteed victory next time you play City in the league?
In addition to other things mentioned, it’s only a one-off game. It doesn’t have the feel of a final that teams have worked hard to reach.
Seems like it’s very much dependent on what the matchup is. It’s meaningful and important when it’s like a Man City v Arsenal.
Ohh interesting, I didn’t know about the origins of the shield, I forgot its also called the charity shield. Thanks for that.
That’s actually a valid point 😂. Though i did mean it more as other countries take it more of an actual competitive win/trophy as opposed to England
