Hello everyone,

I’m trying to decide between the GT-AXE16000 and the RT-BE96U for my home network, which includes:

  • 1.2GBe Internet
  • NAS with 10GBe NIC
  • PC with 10GBe NIC
  • 11x Ring Cameras
  • 4x Fire Sticks
  • 8x Echo Devices
  • Several Smart Devices

GT-AXE16000 pros over RT-BE96U:

  • Wouldn’t need to use a 10GBe switch for my 2 10GBe devices due to dedicated 2.5GBe WAN port
  • Dual 5GHz bands to help with network congestion
  • Matured firmware and WiFi protocol

RT-BE96U pros over GT-AXE16000:

  • WiFi 7 (future proofing)

I already have a 2.5GBe/10GBe switch that I’m using with my ISP-provided modem… so it’s more so if $150 more for additional future proofing worth it when I don’t even have any WiFi 7 devices at the cost of one less 5GHz band.

In case anyone wonders why I’m choosing between these two, or specifically ASUS:

  • WiFi 6e Minimum
  • At least 2x 2.5GBe+ ports (1 for connection to modem, 1 to switch (to 10GBe devices and to additional router for wired backhaul if I ever wanted to))
  • Free Security Protection

Having purchased an axe16000 just last week i have to say its a massive improvement over my previous rog router, which has now been resigned to a mesh node. I didnt want to wait and go with unratified bleeding edge tech. But will probably upgrade again in 2 years time. I’m on 1Gb wan, but getting 1.6 installed next week. This router perfectly handles my 2.5gb internal home network, and im looking forward to gradually upgrading my home internal network to 10gb over the course of the next few years. I’m currently using Wan1 as primart, lan 1 (ethernet 1gb) as a secondary failover emergency wan. One of the 10gb sockets as a backhaul to a corresponding 10gb network hub that feeds out to my home machines and Nas etc… the question you need to ask yourself is do you want to be a beta tester on a new product, or go with something established for a few years first. :)
