I just got a Netgear GS724TP from eBay as my first switch. I wanted a 24 port gigabit poe. Its 3 fans are super loud. This is especially an issue because the cabinet is in my bedroom. I know that I can swap out the fans for quieter ones etc but I was wondering if anyone could give me some good recommendations on other units that might be much quieter. My only criteria is 24 ports, gigabit, poe and probably something that’s regularly available second hand for very cheap but is considered to be excellent equipment, competitive with current models. PS I’m about $40 into this thing so it’s no great loss. I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Get a Cisco 3850 switch on eBay, pretty dirt cheap. Those access switches are not dead slient but barely audible, unless you have a unbearablely hot environment I don’t think the fans will ever turn up.

Quieter fans often translate to slower speed fans, especially for 1U rack devices. This in turn translates to lower cooling capacity. Not really a good idea.

Excellent + used… likely. Comparable to current models? Much less likely.

There are some fanless Ubiquiti POE switches with 16+ port counts.

You may want to consider your POE port count, and go with a smaller POE switch, paired with a non-POE switch.

There are lots and lots of 24 port gig switches, fanless, and not PoE. HP ProCurves are cheap and good entry devices. If you don’t have a big need for PoE then get an 8 port fanless and connect the two.
