So Messi just won his 8th Ballon d’Or, the highest in the history of football by miles. But when asked if he thinks he is the best player in the history of football, his response was- “I don’t know if I’m the best player in history or not, but to be among the best is a great honor”.
How can a man be so humble, given all the accolades he has achieved, and the un-humanly performances he has given over the years? There are players who are not half his worth, who don’t hesitate for a second before boasting themselves as the self-proclaimed GOAT.
I guess even personality-wise, Messi is out of this world, just like he is on the pitch.
I have no problem with Messi getting it. My main issue is that the reason Messi got it was the same reasons that in the past were not enough for others to get it
2010 Xavi and Iniesta are the prime example. Won their country their only world cup ever, Iniesta even scored the iconic winning goal, Messi got it because of his insane numbers and UCL top scorer. And I think he earned it because he was the best player in the world that year
Why does that not apply this year? If the penalties in the final went a different way he wouldn’t have won the Ballon D’Or? What sense does that make?
