2010:

  • Messi 60 G/A
  • Xavi & Iniesta: World Cup Winners
  • Ballon D’or Winner: Messi

2023:

  • Haaland: 71 G/A + Treble
  • Messi: World Cup Winner
  • Ballon D’or Winner: Messi

I always insisted that Messi deserved 2010 Ballon D’or but at this point it’s a joke. Haaland deserved this one. Better numbers than Messi during the 2022/2023 season but they give it to Messi for a 7 games display when they got 5 penalties in 7 games

And in the same world cup he had 5 or 6 penalties so why are you making it as of he scored spectacular hard goals

I never said he did. I said he dominated the World Cup, which, along with winning it, will get you the Ballon d’Or.

I’m not reading the rest of your stat obsessed nonsense. You’re reducing the game down purely to numbers because you don’t understand it. You’re missing the point.

I never said he did. I said he dominated the World Cup, which, along with winning it, will get you the Ballon d’Or.

I am saying if you had that many penalties in a world cup and so few open play goals which even tap ins are often harder to do than a penalty you can’t claim that you were some good goalscorer or that you particularly dominate it. And you can’t equate a world cup with 3 trophies.

I’m not reading the rest of your stat obsessed nonsense. You’re reducing the game down purely to numbers because you don’t understand it. You’re missing the point.

When you try to find the best player in a given sport you have to quantify his performances so that the award is objective you are just saying that you don’t like stats because they would trump your claim that Messi deserved it. And the fact that you didn’t even read them at all and call it stat obsessed nonsense shows that you are going at this from an emotional point of view and not a logical point of view you are just showing your extreme bias for Messi. Furthermore the fact that you say that "you are reducing the game purely to numbers because you don’t understand it shows that you don’t understand the stats and not that I don’t understand the game because those stats shows the direct contribution of both players and since they are not in your favour you discard them for “more beautiful play” which doesn’t matter in a collective sport and especially when you try to say how a good player was if he didn’t have a good direct impact.

I didn’t read past the sixth line of your post but everything Argentina did in that World Cup went through Messi. As I say, you don’t understand this on account of looking at football as something that can be totally quantified with statistics.

Football can be quantified that’s the reason we have stats. And if it wasn’t for the refeere Messi would of have gone home against the Netherlands they didn’t have a smooth sailing so to speak.
