As a Newcastle fan, it is really weird and down bad seeing ultras being so down with the whole “Saudi Arabia owns the club so now we’re on our way to be Man City” argument.
Totally curious question coming from Fan Of Another Club, but i watched Wolves v Newcastle and you were playing in the Saudi kit (sorry, as an Australian who sees us regularly playing Saudi Arabia for World or Asia Cup qualifying there is no other way to see it).
What is the general view among the fan base about your away kit now being the Saudi strip? Was there a more traditional away kit that is now lost?
From what I can gather, most people aren’t particularly glad about it. But most casual fans don’t care enough to think much about the politics of it.
I think that the average fan with half a brain acknowledges that sportswashing isn’t great. But the average fan would also be down with more resources that could potentially benefit the club in the long run. That kit makes me cringe, but most people are happy that Newcastle are winning again enough to turn the other cheek.
Newcastle is also a weird case because the Saudis haven’t used the money to buy a bunch of big name players, at least not yet. This doesn’t make it any less morally dubious, but there’s certainly more of a gray area.
All of this said, I hate the current state of affairs. I wanted to us to be relevant again, just not like this. I’ll always be a magpies fan, but being whores to the Saudis isn’t awesome. Then again, that’s football for you.
