  • In my opinion the latest.

Make sure you read the full release notes of every intermediary release, as some contain upgrade steps (skipping those labelled ‘beta’ or ‘rc’)

When I say ‘read the full release notes’ please note, that the release list at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases only contains the beginning of each release note. You’ll need to click on the title of each release to read the full notes.

So: (1) read full release notes of all releases. (2) take a note of all steps required in each release. (3) check out 4.2.1. (4) execute all steps in order.

    Don’t forget (0) make a backup though 😬

  • I mean, there are differences in terms of features between the two. Also differences in terms of activity. In my area of interest (cybersecurity, web dev, technology) Mastodon has far more interesting (for me) activity than Bluesky.

In terms of servers: With Bluesky there is no choice of servers. With Mastodon there is. But in most cases the choice of server doesn’t matter all that much with Mastodon.

IMO, for someone who doesn’t know, it’s best to just randomly pick from one of the big Mastodon servers (mastodon.social, mstdn.social, universeodon.com, etc) and get started. Don’t overthink it.

Hence my comment: If you don’t know, you won’t really make a mistake by just going with dot social.
