  • Ramsdale is not an elite keeper in any sense. Just a good one.

The opportunity to sign Raya came up and we took it, because in key areas he is better than Ramsdale, and he is willing to play the way Arteta wants.

Of course there is meritocratic competition. No one made this ridiculous assertion when Ramsdale replaced Leno as number 1 or when any other player is dropped for another.

People want Raya dropped for mistakes but it is not about 90 minutes, it’s about what the players do on the training ground. If Ramsdale shows he’s better he will play. No coach picks a worse player.

So yeah, you still haven’t given me any real reason why there is a rift aside from the theory that Ramsdale is an elite keeper who’s been dropped for no reason.

  • I think he is getting the hang of it still. There have been a few times he’s played some good passes. I think he actually had a successful throughball in the West Ham league cup game to Eddie.

I think we definitely want him to be more creative, but it just hasn’t worked out so far. But it will come. And partly it is role where he plays much higher up and is required to be a presence in the box. Or he is switching with Saka on the right. So he is playing a very unselfish role and as he gets more comfortable with Arteta’s instructions he will find more room to express himself.

  • Maybe Ramsdale is better at some things.

However, I think the reason Raya starts is that he is mentally stronger and willing to play the risky style that Arteta is asking of his GK. Ramsdale even admitted he couldn’t do it.

Xhaka’s comments after that Newcastle game were pointed at Ramsdale more than anyone. He was too scared to follow the gameplan.

I love Ramsdale’s personality and everything, but it’s down to him to now push himself and find the maturity and courage to reach his potential. This is what it takes to be a top keeper now. You can’t stay on your line and hoof it.

I don’t think it’s a settled competition. Ramsdale has it in him to claw it back. But he needs to be able to do what the coaches ask.
