Tailscale is a pretty good option if said old people have an Android or Apple TV, not sure about availability of Tailscale on any other OSs. Run it on your server and the TV client, grab the Tailscale IP from the dashboard and enter [Tailscale IP]:[Jellyfin port] when the Jellyfin app asks for the server address. You could homebrew a VPN too. Only other option would be a domain name and a reverse proxy.

politics @lemmy.world•Baby boomers are collecting 265% of what they paid into Social Security—and millennials are paying the price | FortuneEnglish
91·13 days agoIsn’t that how Social Security is supposed to work? In 30 years it’s going to be Gen A paying for millennials. It only has reserves because the trust fund was set up to cover the baby boomers because they knew it was a much larger generation. The trust fund was never intended to be a permanent fixture.

Technology@lemmy.world•Kansas Schools Now Collect Phones at the Door – Spends $180K On Smartphone LockersEnglish
31·24 days agoGo for it. I don’t need any recognition or anything. A couple disclaimers:
1 - I’m not from the area in question, but I work in the public sector overseeing spending, so I thought it was an interesting exercise in understanding the scale we end up dealing with. So my comment is just a demonstration. None of this is actual information about the specific school district’s plans. I’m assuming they must be getting their lockers even cheaper than the ones I found with a quick search, because with my numbers you’re blowing past $180k pretty quickly once you scale it up to the whole district.
2 - I used this site for the student population. I didn’t cross-reference it or anything, so I have no idea how accurate it is. It states 5788 total enrollment, with 31.2% at Campus High School, so that’s where I got the 1800 students. It looks like the district serves multiple southwestern suburbs of Wichita, which makes a little more sense since the total population of Haysville itself is under 12k.

Technology@lemmy.world•Kansas Schools Now Collect Phones at the Door – Spends $180K On Smartphone LockersEnglish
64·24 days agoFollowed some links and did some googling. The school district in question is USD-261 in Haysville, Kansas. The high school should have about 1800 students, so they would need 67 of these cell phone lockers. The price for 6+ is $1510, but let’s knock another $110 off since they’re buying 11 times that many, so $1400. That’s $93,800, for just the high school, and that’s before we talk about where the hell you’re going to put 67 of those things, and who you’re going to pay to install them and do any necessary renovations to accommodate them.

51·1 month agoFor me, 4 really nailed the mechanical gameplay. It felt good to speed around the streets and get in gun fights in a way that none of the others have before or after. I know there’s a large contingent that feels the same way, so I’m hoping R* has been paying attention and goes back in that direction for 6. GTA 5 had superior environments and story, but it just didn’t feel as good to play.

8·1 month agoAOC says millennials aren’t punk kids anymore? No shit. I haven’t been a punk kid for 20 years. Even Gen Z aren’t kids anymore. There are a few of them that are already managers at my workplace. Insane how US mainstream culture has held space for boomers for so long. So frustrating how unserious we’re considered to be when we’ve been the ones on the ground making shit happen for the last decade or more. Shout out to Gen X for never having been taken seriously.

4·2 months agoThese people are eugenicists. They are trying to kill us. The ones they can’t kill will have their wealth siphoned from them to fund this balooning, kleptocratic federal deficit. They are looting the near-dead body of the empire so they can transcend nations, and us, the blood, flesh and bones, will be left to rot. We have one, maybe two chances left to defeat these people peacefully.

Same, I had enough people I wanted to have access to it that I didn’t feel like explaining Tailscale to all of them. Also, you can’t easily run Tailscale alongside a regular VPN like Proton or Mullvad. Of course, you have to pay for the domain name and setting up a reverse proxy and appropriate DNS forwarding rules are not trivial tasks.
