  • I used to be super sentimental and a bit of hoarder, but when my parents split and were talking about selling the house I had to start getting rid of stuff. It was hard at first, but got easier over time.

First I got rid of junk in bad shape. Then I started donating stuff in good shape I would never use or display again. Then I got rid of stuff I hadn’t used or wanted to use in a very long time. Then I got rid of stuff that I had used or would want to use again that I thought I could easily replace. Throughout the process I would put aside anything I struggled to put in a garbage bag or donation box. When I finally had to go through that stuff, I had been desensitized to getting rid of sentimental things and got rid of more than half of it.

Now, all my stuff would fit in one moving truck. All I really kept were: books, games and consoles, records and my player, tools, some useful tech stuff, camping gear, instruments, some plushies, probably like a tenth of my clothes, a couple basic furniture items, and only a box worth of small sentimental items.

  • I feel like with most cases of post 2008 technology, what they’re doing is interesting on the surface level. The problem is that it’s always a wildly inefficient and predatory solution for whatever problem.

Self driving cars sound like a good idea, smoother traffic, safer roads, etc. The problem is the technology isn’t really there yet and the way it’s currently implemented is dangerous and inefficient and really has no place on actual roads. So what we end up with are waymos that are error prone and susceptible to harassment from people and teslas causing accidents. That harassment waymos get is somewhat justified too because of what they represent. Instead of billions of dollars being spent on public transit which would solve the same problems more efficiently, billions of dollars are spent on a personal, luxury, novelty transit experience.

As far as the ML goes, yeah it’s interesting I guess. It needs vastly more data than it has because driving is incredibly complicated. I don’t really have any basis for it, but I kinda don’t think it’ll ever be effective enough until we reach some kind of technology breakthrough with quantum computing or something. There’s too many data bottlenecks for the amount of data processing required. Until we get that, waymo is just gonna have to keep relying on underpaid Filipino support staff to fill in the gaps.

  • I actually don’t hate it. I just don’t know who this is for. The kind of person who would want a hose clamp as a bracelet certainly isn’t the kind of person who’ll get a $700 bracelet.

Actually, I just realized while writing this, this is actually perfect for the kind of person with one of those pristine, enormous pickup trucks. It’s for people with wealth who want to larp as working class.
