It’s not a “lately” thing - those talking points have been around in some fashion since the days of the Prius. What’s happening is that hybrids and EVs have been swept up in the culture wars - progressives see carbon footprint as a problem that needs to be mitigated, which leads reactionaries to oppose such measures at any cost, up to and including citing reasons that aren’t even true.
