  • Just got it to boot consistently on the OLED:

    I ran the controller layout tool when launching the game & set vsync off.

    Then, I set compatability to GE Proton 8-25.

    Booted right to the game after that.

    For a few other tests:

    I went back to the controller option and set vsync back to on, and it still booted without a problem.

    Rolling back to the default proton version just gave the white screen again.

    I cleared out all the FF12 compat data so it would reset the proton setup, then skipped the controller stuff (vsync still on) and set proton GE 8-25, it booted without a problem again. Maybe it’s just the proton version that needs setting.


  • Crashing unfortunately ramped up after the “stable” 3.5.5 update and still needs to be fixed. Unfortunately, this just adds another variable to the mix that could be causing you issues. In my case, DJMax V worked perfectly before the update, but after, it was crashing every 30 seconds to 10 mins. Same for a couple others I had tried.

    It seems to be vram related, and you can work around it by bumping UMA frame buffer size up to 4g. You can also set it back to the default 1g at any time. For steam OS, the amount is supposed to adjust dynamically as needed. This will just reserve a minimum of 4g ram for video, leaving 12g ram open for everything else.

    Hold + as the deck boots, go to setup utility, advanced, UMA Frame buffer Size, set it from 1G to 4G, save & exit.

    This cleared up all the annoying crashes I was having, verified on 2 decks as well. The downside is that it reduces the amount of usable RAM for everything else, which could also lead to crashes or reduced performance in a game if 12+ is needed. It shouldn’t be seen as a fix for crashing, but rather a possible workaround until valve patches things up.

    Take a few minutes to Google steamdeck vram & you’ll see plenty of reddit posts on it. I’d still recommend dropping it back to 1g after each update to see if steam resolved the crashing or not.
