I wonder if this means theyve made progress on video encoding too…

Technology@lemmy.world•So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafeEnglish
44·17 days agoIt’s shitty moves like this that have me feeling deeply grateful about the fediverse. It’s NOT without its myriad of problems, but how lucky are we? We’re insulated from all this bullshit.
Mastodon is every bit as good (and better) as it was when I started using it in 2018. Can the same be said for Reddit, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube? Absolutely the fuck not.

17·17 days agoIts amazing to me how consistently the shitty behaviours of these billionaire techbro oligarchs impact disabled or marginalised people… even when the point isnt to directly shit on them. Its fucking vile.
I honestly think many (too many, but certainly not all! I am one) programmers are some of the immoral, ethically spurious people around in the 21st century.

Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube is making a major change to how long-form video views are countedEnglish
7·28 days agoI love how they played such a big part in destroying people’s attention spans TO engage in longer form content… only to have to enshittify their own platform to solve the problem that they helped create
If you like funky Argentine funky indie pop? Bandalos Chinos are the dogs bollocks
Yes but, if you do that you don’t get to completely give away your thinking faculties to the magic misinformation machine 🤡
Thanks, I absolutely hate it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Schools across America are quietly admitting that screens in classrooms made students worse off and are reversing years of tech-first policiesEnglish
6·2 months agoDefinitely. While I agree with rolling back some of these tech first policies, I think we need to be focusing on HOW it’s used.
I worry that disabled kids will be caught in the line of fire, too.

172·2 months agoSay this stupid bullshit was true: you’re spending so much time baby minding the fucking thing that you’re not saving time?!? I don’t doubt that slop generators can code. But can they generate good code AND save you time? No.

10·2 months agoIt’s a weird one for me, because it feels inevitable anyway, and I’m at the point where I just wanna get it over with 🫠
I just don’t agree with the sentiment about how FOSS devs need it because theyre usually one man shows.
I’m a FOSS dev, and yes, I’m a one gal show. But, I was doing this before AI and I’ll be doing it the same way long after. I don’t want a so called “tool” that’s going to hallucinate security problems into my work.

I think there’s a missing point from the “Brain drain” part of the post:
Yes, brain drain is real when using these tools. But its brain drain and the fact that this gravy train bubble will pop soon. And once it does? Prices for these tools will skyrocket.
Even if the bubble doesn’t pop, they’ll have to increase prices to remain viable. At which point, you’re dev infrastructure will be entirely dependent on AI slop, and you won’t have developed any of the skills to cope without it. This is a slow motion car crash waiting to happen. If you outsource intelligence to private corps, you WILL get screwed.

171·8 months agoThis is exactly the kind of job I’m looking for. The software industry is full of the vilest exploiters. I don’t care if I don’t get paid a bunch, I just don’t wanna fuck up our planet or our people.
It’s just unfortunate that most tech companies are full of the worst people to walk the planet. (I am being a little hyperbolic here, but honestly I’m so sick of all the experiences ive had)

But did you double check what it generated about the sources? These LLMs are vastly prone to lying about things. Which is why I feel like they’re nearly completely useless.
If I have to treat everything it says as a lie, especially if it won’t source or substantiate its claims, then what good is it? If I have to manually verify everything, I may as well look it up myself.
