That damn “warranty void if removed” sticker. I wasn’t allowed to tinker with the old family Win3.1 PC until 1999 because of that damn sticker, and only because we finally replaced the old dinosaur with a shiny new Windows 98 SE laptop.

The irony is that I regret my decision. 11-year-old me thought it would be a good idea to take the entire thing apart without knowing how to put it back together, so I never did. It would have been nice to still have it around to relive childhood memories…

On the bright side, it sparked my interest in building my own PCs, which I was finally able to do in 2008 after saving up my money. Core 2 Duo E8400, 4GB of DDR2 800, and a Radeon HD 4850. Built it powerful enough to run Crysis. It couldn’t run most games beyond 45 FPS, but back then that was good enough for me. These days even 120Hz no longer looks as smooth as it used to. Can’t wait for the day when we finally get blur-free 1000Hz OLEDs

  • That’s a fair assessment. She is the youngest and her asshole siblings would never let her use their game consoles. She didn’t get her own until age 10.

But to be even more fair, I didn’t get my first console (N64) until I was 9. Some kids were lucky enough to have parents willing to buy them expensive electronics at a younger age. Neither of us were that lucky/spoiled. But my neighbor who was one year younger than me had a SNES and a PC. I didn’t get my own PC until 2004. Until then everyone except my dad had to share the living room computer, and it had the shittiest GPU in the world—GeForce4 MX 4000—which was basically a scam card. But it was good enough to run Driver and Spider-Man (the one based on the first Tobey film), so it was good enough for me. Half-Life 2 was out of the question, though.

  • Etymotic makes exactly what you’re looking for.

That said, there is no such thing as hearing protection that doesn’t muffle high frequencies at least somewhat. But what you can do instead is buy earbuds with ANC + audio pass through and foam tips. But keep in mind that the audio will be colored by the frequency response of the headphones, making live audio sound more like a recording. You’ll still get the benefits of the live experience, however, because you’ll still be able to feel the bass.

Keep in mind that these kind of earbuds are basically hearing aids, however. So they won’t be cheap. They’re known as “hearables” and “OTC hearing aids”. And not all of them form a seal around your ear, which means that not all of them are suitable for hearing protection. Which why you’ll need to do your homework and find some that have foam tips. Also be prepared to spend hundreds, possibly thousands.

Or you can just deal with a little bit of muffled audio and buy the Etymotic earplugs. That’s what I would do.

  • Sanders wants the same change everyone wants; the problem is that half the country is too stupid to realize it.

Just ask any Republican. They want the same shit everyone else wants: a lower cost of living, and a better way of life. Yet they actively continue to vote for the party that goes against their interests. Usually because of single issues like abortion or guns. Or they just like Trump because he speaks like them, while completely ignoring all the terrible, horrible things he’s done to screw over his base. It’s absolutely maddening.

Millennial, here (1988) and this is just my early-to-mid teen years, which I consider part of my childhood.

Showed the meme to my GF who born in 1995 and she couldn’t even relate to half of this starter pack. Her era was Wii and DS, not GBA and PS2. Her first phone was an iPhone.
