The Summer and the Winter sales are the big ones. Winter is in late December. Autumn sale is still cool though. Steam sales in general are destroyers of wallets.
Humble bundle is also a great source. Every few days a bundle gets replaced with a new one and they pretty much always come with keys that you can redeem in your steam account.
I had the same combing approach and found it just too much. I think it shines much better if you just do the main quest, and go to those icons when they’re more or less on your path, or when you simply feel like a break from the main quest.
Novigrad looks huge and full of stuff, but then you get to Skellige and it’s like fuck.
And then it still keeps going, and then there’s the expansions…
It’s a great game, but trying to do everything at once is just gonna burn you out
