Poll: Americans overwhelmingly want Trump to obey court rulings, but MAGA Republicans are split are traitors.
FTFY
Honestly I don’t mind trucks or SUVs specifically but vehicles are getting way too big on average, I mean the F150 is North America’s best selling vehicle (*edit: I have since learned as of 2024 that spot actually belongs to the RAV4) since forever. It’s a problem of misaligned incentives.
There’s an exception carved out for large vehicles in the EPA guidelines that hold them to less stringent emissions standards which incentivizes building larger vehicles 1
Large cars are also incentivized by our crash safety rating system which only takes into account the mortality rate of those inside the car as apposed to average related fatalities. This means it will prioritize safety of those in the vehicle, which has led to our average fatalities increasing. 2
As an unintended side effect this also damages roads much faster because vehicle weight per axle determines the magnitude of the damage a vehicle does to the road. 3 anecdotally this makes me concerned for the additional weight that electric cars add.
Also as vehicles increase in weight the amount of microplastics put into the air as a by product of tire wear increase. 4
As cars increase in size (and therefore weight) the downsides are exponential.
it’s amazing how Republicans keep proving they’re just the worst people imaginable and every four to eight years after they’re ousted for being the horrible people that they are people forget and let them back in
I understand it’s a consequence of the first past the post system but it just sucks.
i prefer mine a bit lighter but that is one admirable piece of toast
Honestly social housing fell out of fashion it used to be way more common but NIMBYs made them impossible to build, hell even now could you imagine trying to build them with the conservative crowd?
Same vibes as when they were going on about “clean” coal.
Conflating the Conservatives and Liberals because of some ideological overlap isn’t useful.
Let’s lay it out plainly, we prevented the worst case scenario but it still moved us to the right. We need to advocate for left wing policies and do our best to keep our politician’s honest. However we won’t see results until we can apply direct pressure with votes, neglecting the adoption of a more progressive voting system was the true failure of the Trudeau government.
Because Reddit is corporate rock and we’re punk rock
The world is so fucked, they could create a machine that grinds orphans into bullets to kill single mothers and 45% of the population would support it if it was pitched by Their Guy ™️
At least you don’t have a co-worker that messages you Happy Fri-yay! and Happy Fri-yay eve!
alright between this and the border control bill, I’m really starting to miss Trudeau
Runs in the family I guess, and by family I mean Republican caucus.
You’re right that media coverage needs to be scrutinized however I’d argue it’s easier said than done. We’re barraged by a constant onslaught of information far more than we have the time or energy to process. This problem is compounded by our tribal tendencies, which politicians exploit by flooding the discourse with empty controversies while quietly pushing through more sinister actions.
This dynamic also helps explain why disadvantaged populations are often less informed or politically engaged. When daily life is a struggle for survival, scrutinizing this week’s partisan bill or police skirmish inevitably falls lower on the priority list.
TL;DR;
Trump admin guts the Biden-era EMTALA guidance which forced hospitals to provide life-saving abortions in medical emergencies.
CMS claims it’ll still enforce EMTALA only if the fetus is also at risk. Translation: Pregnant people’s health no longer matters.
SCOTUS’s non-rulings left ER docs guessing if they’ll face prison for doing their jobs.
This isn’t “states’ rights” it’s state-sanctioned femicide. The admin’s own CMS admits the goal is to “rectify confusion” (read: intimidate hospitals into compliance).
I couldn’t agree more unfortunately it just feels like the only real solution would be one at the government policy level
I can’t imagine trying to pay with cash anymore, stores aren’t really set up for it anymore
we only maintain cash symbolically
I hear your frustration, and I won’t deny that some feminist spaces have blind spots or even hostility toward men’s issues. But dismissing the entire movement because of those flaws is like rejecting democracy because some politicians are corrupt it throws out the good with the bad. Feminism, at its core, is about dismantling rigid gender roles, which harms men too (e.g., stigma around male vulnerability, custody biases, conscription).
You’re right that some self-labeled feminists don’t live up to that ideal, but that doesn’t negate the millions who fight for parental leave, against male suicide stigma, or for LGBTQ+ rights. If you’ve been burned by hypocrites, I get it but I’d encourage you to judge ideas by their best advocates, not their worst.
That said, I’m open to your examples. If we agree the goal is equality, maybe we can find common ground on where movements fall short.
Who could have possibly predicted that Trump would side with Putin? What an utterly shocking development if only there had been years of obsequious praise, leaked intelligence to Russian officials, and repeated calls to dismantle NATO as clues! Truly, nobody saw this coming.
