Whats up with number 20 in the image?
I knew someone would do this.
Benayoun I guess. Mostly because I watched every game he played in but basically don’t remember how he played.
He was such a unique player. Sort of a DM who could also launch a killer final pass. He was all over the pitch.
I see the Eddie haters giving him a 1 out of 10 in the results spreadsheet. FFS.
Yeah… it’s a tough one. I’m a huge Wenger fan and even I (For HIS own sake) wanted him to leave the club because it was becoming too toxic. He didn’t deserve the hate and therefore the club didn’t deserve him anymore.
I think the biggest criticism that is valid is that tactically we played the same damn football every single game against every opponent. It worked great against a lot of teams but it was extremely predictable and very easy to counter attack against. There was one time in like 10 years I remember some of the players saying they decided to mix it up against Chelsea by playing long balls to Van Persie and I was like, why the hell don’t they have these talks every game? I’m sure they did to some extent but Wengerball was attack attack attack and play beautiful football, it’s why Ozil thrived under Wenger but was disposed of under Emery/Arteta who are more well balanced in their approach. Someone can correct me but I believe Wenger only beat Mourinho 2 times in 19 attempts? That’s how bad of a strategy his style was against defensive minded coaches.
The more time passes the more amazing it looks that Wenger kept us in the Champions League as long as he did with the squad he had. We had scraps for a budget and were a selling team for a while. Imagine selling Odegaard to Barcelona for way less than market value, that’s what we did with Fabregas. Imagine selling Gabi Jesus to Manchester United because “the child in him” told him to move somewhere where he thought they had more ambition and a winning culture (lol how that has changed, but that’s what Van Persie said). And when City first started investing in their squad it seemed like a quarter of their team was ex-Arsenal players. During the worst of it, Wenger operated for a long time under an ownership model that had multiple investors and therefore it was difficult for them to sign off on huge money signings because they didn’t completely own the club. To be fair to Wenger, even when the club was 100% owned by the Kroenke’s they still didn’t open their checkbooks for several years.
If Wenger had this team I really do believe we’d be title contenders. I mean, we have the luxury of STILL being title contenders with Arteta but if I had one criticism of today’s team it sometimes lacks creativity that Wenger teams would pull out of their ass. Many of us have that Song pass to Van Persie etched into our brains. I remember an Arshavin quote about Wenger, somethig like “he let’s us play”. Here’s some more Arshavin quotes that sum up Wenger’s style, in a lot of ways Arshavin was such a perfect player of Wengerball:
“Anyway, if you look at Arsenal, the squad we have isn’t designed to win 1-0. That’s why you have 60,000 coming to the Emirates, they come to see something beautiful, something memorable.”
Keep his name out of your Dench.
Happy that he scored but the timing of this and the actual content screams club propaganda.
