Canada@lemmy.ca•Imperial Oil pipeline spills 843,000 litres northwest of Cold Lake, Alta.English
7·3 days agoCan’t wait for the provincial NDP to come out in opposition over this.
Oh wait, they’re too busy fighting the federal party for new oil and gas developments…

Canada@lemmy.ca•Imperial Oil pipeline spills 843,000 litres northwest of Cold Lake, Alta.English
13·3 days agoIt’s an older way of doing so, deprecated abbreviation for post and mail iirc. Some communities take their name from it a little like Sunalta and perhaps Altadore.

2·4 days agoThis is what happens when housing is seen as a commodity rather than as a human right.
You get moments like this where people are wanting to tear down literal historical landmarks to try and capitalise on how much money they’re allowed to squeeze out of renters.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Analysis: Mark Carney enters his majority eraEnglish
41·5 days ago“A good move”
Yeah, great move from an indigenous MP siding with the government that not long ago tried to bypass treaty rights for “projects of national interest”.
You’re totally going to get a good voice in with all the Conservatives who crossed the floor, including someone who suggested sending in the military to deal with the Wet’suwet’en pipeline protests.
Idlout’s crossing was dumb and outright pathetic. Like congrats on being the token indigenous person for whenever the Liberals run into issues with indigenous people. “Well actually we’re not trampling over indigenous rights, look, we have an indigenous woman here!”.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Analysis: Mark Carney enters his majority eraEnglish
112·5 days agoYay, glad that we’re getting a majority that will give no fight whatsoever against AI taking people’s jobs and ruining small communities through noise, increased electricity bills, and water restrictions for corporate profits.

112·5 days agoGlad that instead we got a conservative leader who speaks out both sides of his mouth…
Edit: To clarify, I’m talking about Carney here, I see him and the Liberals as a conservative party.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Millions of Americans are now eligible for Canadian citizenship and many are applying ‘just in case’ | CNNEnglish
11·9 days agoI have an issue with it personally. We already struggle enough with our cultural identity not being influenced by the U.S. and them seeing as a “safe haven” extension of the U.S. rather than as a sovereign nation, and now we’re actively bringing those people in.
Personally I don’t care about generation gaps, I want this to be more thorough. In the same way I don’t see Jim Carrey, Seth Rogen, or other celebrities that spend over 90% of their time in the U.S. as “Canadian”, I don’t see the average person who spends all their time in U.S. as “Canadian”.
If we want to take in people genuinely at risk, we remove the Safe Third Country agreement. If this country wanted to right historical wrongs, they could have been more specific rather than do this blanket ruling. Like I’m really looking forward to people who have no true connection to this place whatsoever coming in and doing things like complaining about CanCon laws because Dr. Phil isn’t on TV enough at best, and moving our politics to the right at worst.
I don’t want to see a single American coming up this way if they’re either not in danger and seeing us as a “backup” for inconveniences in life they’re not utilising their civic duties to address, or if they’re in danger and did this to themselves with their voting record (or lack of). If there’s anybody we should be bringing in less of right now, it’s Americans.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Waitrose employee sacked after stopping shoplifter from taking Easter eggsEnglish
101·14 days agoI don’t know about the UK, but this makes sense to me.
Working retail here in Canada, common rule is to prevent shoplifting through having eyes on suspicious people. However, you never go after them yourself when they leave the store, or even do so much as accuse them of stealing while they’re in the store. You make security, who’re specialised for the task and are workers with a contract company, aware and they recover the shoplifted merchandise.
It’s for safety reasons and to avoid different lawsuits. The store doesn’t want to be held legally liable for injuries or possible discrimination.

Canada@lemmy.ca•'MAID is not death on demand': Physicians decry proposed Alberta assistance in dying billEnglish
4·20 days agoI’m mixed on this. I can understand this specific bill from the UCP, but even if they genuinely have the same concerns as I do, I don’t trust them to do what’s right to address the issues that MAiD has.
I do think MAiD is way too accessible, and has been used as a means to shelve the issues of the system for disabled people. Like, even a lot of Track 1 applications have been found to be from people who were denied proper access to pain relief.
Also, maybe people would be less inclined to access MAiD as an option if we made life easier and more accessible for them? The UCP has already expressed interest in making life harder for disabled people by cutting the $200 from AISH for those accessing the Canadian Disability Benefit, which can already be a hassle to apply for.

1·20 days agoYou could try looking at a currency exchange business.
It could be a longshot because of the currency type, but I go to one every now and again to exchange Pound Sterling.
Never heard “running shoes”, but I still hear the term “runners” here and there. Rare that I hear people say “sneakers”, but I’m not a sporty person.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Avi Lewis wins NDP leadership race in decisive first-ballot victoryEnglish
16·21 days agoI couldn’t believe it. I knew Tony (God bless that man) would come in last, but I was certain Rob would come third behind either McPherson or Lewis.
Tanille beating him out either shows that people were more peeved about the AI thing than I would have expected, that I underestimated Tanille’s charm and hard work, or both.
Glad to have had Tanille ranked second on my ballot, but I wasn’t expecting her to have had that much momentum. Genuinely proud of her.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada will cancel thousands of refugee claims under new retroactive lawEnglish
9·22 days agoI can understand this, but I can’t help but worry about friend of mine from Ukraine who came here through a work permit and has been trying to get refugee status since then at the risk of being sent back now that their permit has expired. They didn’t apply as a refugee initially since they came here a few months before the invasion.
They’ve told me the struggles with the waitlists, and it just sounds so frustrating. I understand student visa fraud being an issue, but doing a blanket cutoff like this will put lives at risk.

I used to be a frequent uploader!
Cool, but mundane, was the collection of Watkins audio cassettes I transferred using my old cassette player through a capture card: https://archive.org/details/watkinsaudio
I also transferred sone large format negatives of a building demolition in Regina. I had an entire box I wanted to transfer and hand over to the Saskatchewan Provincial Archives, but unfortunately life got in the way of that: https://archive.org/details/img147_20181005
Both say the uploader is unknown because I deleted my old account some time ago.
