11 months agoI had an uncle in Colombia who was a federal judge in Medellin, Colombia in the 80’s during the heyday of the Medellin Cartel led by Pablo Escobar. Every public figure had bodyguards, had a driver who would change their driving route to court every day and bulletproof vehicles were the norm. This type of safety precautions included the President of Colombia as when he came to Medellin.
@Thanos_Stomps As a person who has over 50+ relatives in Colombia, and a distant relative who was the President of Colombia from 2002 to 2010, sometimes finances play a role whether you can leave a dangerous country. Also, many people have small businesses, especially in Medellin and that’s how they make a living. People hate leaving suddenly selling at a huge loss, and not being able to afford to leave a dangerous country. Look at the Japanese American citizens in the United States after the Pearl Harbor attack by the Empire of Japan in World War 2 against the United States. They were forced to sell homes and their own businesses for a pittance. This is the sad reality of my ancestral homeland.
