Dude, you’re the one drawing the lines at who gets to call themselves a musician and who is just a “different kind” of artist. As an “akshul” musician, by your definition, I think you’re mistaken and parroting some reactionary takes.

Boomer take. I’m a musician of two decades, got my degree in music. Sampling is as much an art and practice as playing a “traditional” instrument—I do both.
Are there lazy samplists? Sure, just as there are lazy guitarists. But watch this and tell me this isn’t musicianship. https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=sKMDP-vDsTU
I believe you’re mistaken. You have fallen for the pro-Karen Bass propaganda.
Yes, and I live in LA. I’m a handful of blocks away from the evac warning perimeter. The message is not that budget cuts caused the fire. We who have lived here have seen the fires get worse every year because of climate change. The message is that our mayor’s tough-on-crime politics are to the detriment of public safety and our actual, material needs as Angelenos.
Whoa nice, thanks for the advice. I’ll share it at the next city council. If you’re not aware, Los Angeles is literally on like 5 different fires right now. Given all the fires we’ve had here in LA in recent years, our mayor decided it was a good thing during an era of increasingly more frequent climate disasters to slash our fire budget to fund the cops.
Yes. That’s the hubris of capitalism. Climate disasters don’t discriminate based on class, but they are accelerated by the ruling class.
Welcome to political organizing.
I think the most effective method is to do some sort of organized boycott. We all know well enough how sheisty these companies are. Time to start encouraging each other to quit them en masse.
I think your analysis in pretty on point. In my circles, we call this problem “gender essentialism.” I see that it stems from neoplatonic thought as derived from Christian puritanism, and it desperately attempts to reconcile a kind of cherry-picked modernism with traditionalism. And it fuckin’ sucks.
Transfemme enby here. I hear what you two mean, but I wanna make sure we also resist medicalizing gender nonconformity. While many trans folks undergo bottom surgery to alleviate dysphoria or to simply be “safe” from the scrutiny of the cis gaze, surgery is not what qualifies a trans woman as a woman. The issue isn’t about genitalia, it’s about transmisogyny.
TERFs have so deeply internalized the misogyny that it’s all they know, woman TERFs and man TERFs alike, cis or not ('cause Caitlyn Jenner is still a TERF).
Yes.
Sure! Maybe we can be called Survivors of Poking the Campist Hive lmao.
Alas, I’m not sure how to do that here on Kbin.
First it was fun watching the argument unfold. Now it’s annoying lol. Thank you, kind stranger.
My fibro symptoms have been very manageable thanks to better-regulated sleep.
With my therapist, I worked through some self-hate feelings regarding my singing voice (and obliquely related to gender).
A doctor called me back to talk with me about HRT. My sweet partner has been really supportive as I consider if this is something I’d want atm for my transition.
Lately, I’m feeling more creative like I haven’t felt since my 3rd year of high school.
There are promising signs of justice and liberation in the news this last week.
Defund and divest, baby. Money for health and education, not for war and occupation.
It’s necessary to do more than just put in bike lanes to make for a bike-friendly city.
Classic. Though my entry to the series was via Need for Pede III: Hot Pursuit Lotsa Foots.
This is how I understand what you’re saying: Over here we have the “musicians,” a title reserved for only those who play an instrument. On the other hand we have the “producers,” who make music on a computer, without an “instrument.”
But I say both make human music. And a computer can be an instrument. Drawing notes in MIDI is not much different than composing in Musescore. The producer is not unlike the classical composer, and I say both are musicians. And in a discussion on AI music vs. human music, why should we make a false dichotomy within human music anyway? “All models are wrong, but some are useful,” said George E. P. Box, statistician.
I think people have taken you as arguing in bad faith. I, and I assume many others, would agree with you that Suno AI is bad. I think AI is ethically uncouth. But your original comment seems to be making a false equivalency between AI music and sampling. I think I understand what you mean better, but I still disagree with your premise and think it’s a weak argument for fighting AI.
