At his peak, drexler was the best shooting guard in the league second only to MJ. My question is how well do you think his athleticism and skill would transfer in todays game. What player(s) would you compare him to, and where would you rank him? In my mind I see him as a prime Demar Derozan type player which is meant as no slight to either one of them.
u/jumboponcho raised the point I was going to. Clyde couldn’t go left in isolation. I think his handle was underrated…but it’s still not up to snuff for a star. He could handle in transition, but he didn’t have much shake. As a result, his game was heavily based on pull up jumpers, spot up jumpers, with curls and isolations in the mid post that saw him be able to use his athleticism to attack the basket on the move without taking too many dribbles. Obviously also dynamic in transition and off cuts.
The increased space would surely would benefit Clyde but don’t think he could be a star in this era. Not a good enough ballhandler, not a good enough perimeter shooter.
Top 20 at worst.
Ridiculous athlete, great scorer and great size to play at the 2 and 3, maybe even small ball 4 if you’re feeling frisky
Clyde the glide
Unpopular opinion, but the total lack of a left hand would be way more detrimental now than back then
At his peak, drexler was the best shooting guard in the league second only to MJ
So, not the best shooting guard in the league then?
I clarified he was second to MJ, so yeah that would make him not the best
It’s just that the first half of the sentence contradicts the second
Drexler doesn’t really have a perfect modern comp. He was a #1 option who couldn’t dribble without looking at the ball.
He used strength, athleticism, timely cuts and slashes to score. He wouldn’t be a #1 option in today’s game but he’d still be a valuable player. He’d be a supercharged 3+D type wing.
Alot of the “stars” of Jordan’s era would not fair well today. The league is just alot better and more skilled now.
He’d be the 15th best player. I don’t want to hear any bullshit counter-arguments about him being 14th, 16th, 13th or whatever. I know ball, and he’d be the 15th best player.
