Javier Tebas proposed to the clubs in the Extraordinary Assembly of LaLiga an increase in his salary, as EL ESPAÑOL reported exclusively. The president of the employers’ association will have a new variable salary that can make him earn up to 5.47 million euros a year, compared to the 3.36 million he earned last season.
The proposal by Tebas and the Delegate Commission was approved with 40 clubs voting in favour. Only Real Madrid and one other team - the vote was secret and it is not known which one it was - were against this salary increase through the LaLiga president’s bonus. Real Madrid publicly announced at the Assembly that it would reject both the accounts of the employers’ association, for not being transparent and not being well detailed, and the new remuneration of Tebas.
Tebas’ salary is thus updated retroactively to the 2022/2023 season. Furthermore, if he is re-elected president, this proposal creates a precedent that ensures that his salary can be multiplied by 15 in just 10 years. When he was appointed president, he criticised the salary of his predecessor and reduced it by a few thousand euros to 348,000 euros per year. However, this predisposition was short-lived and he quickly began to propose increases in his variable salaries.
As EL ESPAÑOL exclusively published, Tebas maintains his fixed salary of 2.1 million euros, but changes the bonus he receives at the end of each season. Until now he received up to 65% of that fixed salary as a variable linked to the sale of audiovisual rights.
However, now he will have two variables, one quantitative and one qualitative, which will be linked to the EBITDA of the LaLiga Group. In the Extraordinary Assembly, only the quantitative one was voted, which can make him earn up to 60% of his fixed salary, i.e. 1.31 million euros, and it will be enough to fulfil 85% of the Business Plan for him to be paid.
Why would anyone agree that let alone 95% of the clubs
If they vote against Tebas, they could suddenly have trouble registering their players.
Tebas has successfully pushed the idea that the only thing stopping Madrid and Barca from owning Spanish football is him. That belief is what keeps getting him elected.
