I regularly make vector-based images as a part of my job and would like to upload files I make so they are available for public use.

Aside from Wikipedia Commons, I’m not familiar with any other well-known image databases that provide files to their users for free. Can anyone provide recommendations for places I can submit images I’ve made so others have free access to use them?

Image types are SVGs and PNGs that I have licensed under CC0, usually with a focus on scientific topics, similar to what is found in Biorender or similar products. I have already checked that I have the rights within my employment contract to release images I make at work to the public domain without any fear of reprisal.

That was the first thing I thought of too. Looked through our policies to make sure I could do this without getting in trouble.

It’s not a problem of policies; for capitalism to function it needs you to surrender the product of your labour to your employer, so it’s actually in the law that anything you make while at work legally belongs to your employer.

I can’t speak to your country’s law specifically however (whichever country that is) and some have different wording, but I can be pretty sure that such a law exists

100% agreed and what I would expect. I was using the term policies a bit loosely because I’m a public employee and most of our normal “policies” are outlined in state law.

All of my IP de facto goes to the state, but there are a few instances where the laws allow me to get approval to release minor bits of media that I’ve produced. I think this is mostly because they don’t currently use them as a source of income.

I won’t be doing this without covering my butt first!

Hmm. Image hosting is expensive so it’s tricky.

I know nothing of this space so take this with a grain of salt but with a little searching I found these: svgrepo [dot] com pixabay [dot] com

Broadly speaking these types of images are often but not always known as vector/vectors.

Of course I’d review the site’s terms and licensing briefly before submitting anything, there is the chance of bad actors running such a site, making false claims on their front page then sending DMCA notices claiming copyright of your images to other hosters who will take them down under the harassment rather than fight it.

Yeah, I’m mainly looking at sharing vector images that people can use in making scientific figures and graphical abstracts.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll check these sites out!
