I tend to think the rules in the box are way too harsh and that way too many PKs are awarded, but if that isn’t a handball then handballs simply don’t exist, short of what Suarez did in the World Cup. The rule doesn’t say anything about proximity or where the ball is going, nor should it. I’ve always felt a strict handball rule to be very much in the spirit of the game. Maybe there’s a discussion to be had on what punishment is appropriate but that has to be a handball.

Fwiw, I think the “making the body bigger” part of the rule is silly and it’s so subjective as to be meaningless, but imo that shouldn’t be part of the rule at all. If the ball touches your hand/arm, and it makes a play on the ball (i.e. changes the trajectory and alters the play), it should be a foul.

Gary Neville can shut his fucking mouth comparing it to the pen in the Merseyside derby where the defender hung his arm out and made no attempt to do anything other than block the ball with it.

Can he? I hope he considers it if he can.

Mate he’s such a fucking bellend. Literally nothing alike what happened in the Everton game but he kept blabbering on about it. He needs to be taken off our games and never commentate on us again. Beyond fed up of his bullshit, yet it seems to be every single fucking game he’s on

The issue is how Saliba jumped. If his arms were lower they probably would have taken proximity into account. With your arms that high up you’re giving them a decision to make.

It’s a natural position in that effort, there’s nothing he can do here.

He can not put his hands up. He is not entitled to go for the ball in a way that forces himself to put his hands up and make himself bigger

You can’t play the game with your arms tucked in to your sides at and moment, it’s a silly claim that’s not a natural position. But I as in everyone else don’t know what a handball is anymore.

It’s the correct decision based on the way handballs have been officiated in recent years. The same thing happened to Romero in our match against you.

IMO they should just go back to the ball to hand vs hand to ball analysis, but unfortunately that’s not the way it’s officiated now.

It’s a penalty on current rules but it’s embarrassing to watch what football we look like. 🐧

I’m not even complaining about this call but I cannot even wrap my head around people thinking this kind of handball should be given. A penalty is such a massive call and so game changing. Not talking about the rules or letter of the law blah blah, like actually is this the kind of sport we want to watch 😭
